Hey Joe, this means YOU!

I have been buying old camera magazines on eBoy lately. Man, a stack of smelly old magazines from the 1910's through the 1970's only costs a few bucks, not including postage (and 'media mail' is cheap in the US). What a blast! I'm seeing my favorite old cameras in the context of their times, which really sheds new light on them and makes them even more interesting and exciting to me (Yes, I find old cameras exciting. How sad is that?). I find that I enjoy looking at the ads as much as I like reading the old articles! And some of the arguments they had in print then - color vs B&W fights that look JUST LIKE the film vs digital fights of today! Very cool stuff. You guys should try this.

Anyway, I came across these two Canon ads - and I knew Backalley Photo would love it - and maybe you other Canonistas, too. I have a nice BIG scan of each one if you want them - just email me.

Best Regards,

Bill Mattocks

Bill,

WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF US BUMS!

Do you take requests:

Canon 7;
Nikon SP;
Nikon S3...

I would love to see them scanned as well, if you do not mind.

I kept my 70's mags, but it was the SLR age.

Hey it was thanks to me that Joe discovered the wunnerful 'P' ;) ;)

I'm mailing you Bill, these will look great printed in glossy paper hanging on my wall, just side of the (gasp) glossy paper print of the Nikon SP 2005 :)

Btw did you notice that last drawing in the second brochure ? I guess there's written somewhere 'stainless steel curtains easily wrinkled by only pressing with your finger, get your OWN P and design your OWN wrinkles!!' ;)

Looking back.

Looking back.

I remember an event in the early 60's. My father worked at the Cape in Florida. The launches were crashing and burning. There was an aura of excitement in the new discoverys being made.

My neighbors father had some old Hardy Boy books from the 1910's-1920's. There were these marvelous machines: motorized bicyles that could do 60 MPH, motorized boats , flying machines. Reading about these cutting edge machines in the early part of the century, last century, and the excitement of the writer was contagious. Of course, I was grounded that summer for flunking 5th grade: I liked to play in the woods instead of studying, school was a pain. I did learn to love to read and dream.

I've got a July, 1978 Popular Photography magazine.

Competitive Camera Corp. was selling Electro GSN w/case for $94.50. Rollei 35S f:2.8 for $132.50.

Olden had a slightly used M3 w/Summicron f:2 for $298.50
Wall Street had a used M3 body for $199.00.

Full page ads at the magazine's front were for, in this order: Pentax MX ("The Champion"),
Mamiya 645, Nikon FE (3 pages), Konica C35 Autofocus, Olympus OM1 and OM2 (2 pages), Canon F1, A1, AT1 (4 pages), Fujica AZ-1, Minolta XD11 (2 pages), Ricoh XR1 and XR@, and Konica Autoreflex T4.

I searched the magazine three times. There was not a single ad for a new Leica. Read all the big photo house ads at the mag's rear. Only used Leica stuff.

Must have been the year of the SLR's.

Here's a start...I'll do more as I come across them. Haven't seen a Canon 7 yet...

PS - Send me your email if you want me to email you the big version of this.
