stupid question on Leica NRC

What might be the value of one of these? $30?

Late-50's vintage, pretty nice condition save for a few rubs on the edges of the snout.

Would it be stupid to just hack the top part of this off and use the bottom as a carry-everywhere case? I just don't want to do this and realize that i've spoiled a nice piece of Leica leather.

If the top part is connected to the bottom half with a fixed rivet, as is all too common, you can have a leather shop replace the rivet with a snap. Now you have an improved case, and can use it either way. 🙂

I have two cases that people hacked the top part off which is a pity because you can use a seam ripper to remove the stitching for a neat job and still have the option of resewing it back on later. Doug's idea is also a good one.
