Hi,

I've never shot 4x5 or 8x10 before, and have never used sheet film.

I'm setting up a Medalist II with the sheet film back to do some "Little Large Format" type shooting, and have run into a problem. In my changing bag I removed one piece of sheet film from the Arista.EDU box, so I could practice loading the film holders, and I gotta say, I'm a bit lost on which side of the sheet is emulsion, and which side is base.

One side is darkish grey (which I'm guessing right now is probably the emulsion side) and one side is dark green (which I think might be the base, with an anti-halation coating (the dark green)).

Anyone have experience with sheet film, and know which side is which?

Thanks.

Best,
-Tim

There are notches on one corner of each sheet of film. If you hold a sheet horizontally so that the notches are in the bottom right corner, the emulsion side is facing you. If you hold a sheet vertically and the notches appear on the upper right corner, the emulsion side is also facing you.

I always have to refer to my cheat-sheet about this. But as Doug said, the way to know is by feeling the location of the notches.

I hold the sheet in vertical orientation and feel for the notches at the top and right. Emulsion is facing up. Slide into the holder...

Whew! I just looked at Doug's post and I remembered correctly! Upper-right.
