out shooting this morning with a buddy, my normal saturday morning at the market and the rd1 freezes. shutter will not advance. shut it off, pulled out the battery, changed the battery, let it sit without a battery in it...nothing worked.
pissed off at the day's shooting cut short.

ran some errands, came home, checked the camera...the damn sd card was full!!!

stupid stupid stupid...
 
Hey Joe, that started off as such a sad tale but at least it was a happy ending. Better to be stupid once in a while than have your camera gear breakdown.
 
Sheesh, it's always the little things that trip us up, isn't it?

But this reminds me why I still prefer film cameras. There's just less to deal with. Shutter speed, aperture, focus... and your good to go. Yeah, I know there's a myriad of other things to consider (film, film speed, lens, development, etc., etc.), but when actually shooting the things one needs to remember are wonderfully minimal.

Sorry, Joe, didn't mean to turn this into an anti-digital rant. I enjoy shooting digital, too. It's just that I often find I've forgotten, overlooked or got hung up by some aspect of a digital camera. Maybe I'm just a luddite after all.

I applaud you Joe for having the courage to publicly admit something most of us have done yet won't readily admit.
 
If you can't laugh at yourself you don't have a mirror. I think that was what my father always used to say.
 
Well Joe, I'll be happy to take that frozen R-D1 off of you for cheap. I can't offer much since I'll have to send it in to have that SD card unclogged :p
 
I must remember this, in case it happens to me.

One fall evening, years ago, I was shooting with my Minolta X370s and a tripod, taking long exposures of some places at night. Suddenly, the camera simply died. I got really upset, as I had had it for just two or three months. I had to go back home, thinking about going online and posting a question somewhere about what to do with my dead camera... when, right arriving in the house, it dawned on me that it was the battery.

Got one, replaced it, the camera revived.

But now it was too late to go back where I was.

So, Joe, I know the feeling.

However, I never thought about filling up the card. I'll keep it in mind.
 
Something similar probably happened to every R-D1 owner. The camera has all sorts of weird behavior in this area - from refusal to shoot to, for example, refuse to meter if the shutter is not cocked.

There's a valid analogy to my M2 and its non-automatic frame counter. I was mentally prepared to send the camera in a few times now, until I realised I'm just at the end.

There was a thread by an early RD-1 user that thought he locked up the camera as well, the SD card was full. Years ago! I still remember that thread.

We should have an RD-1 FAQ.
