If you guys could all take the time to look through my selection so far and help me edit these down.

I need to get rid of three of the images. However, if you think there should be more to 'get rid of' then by all means let me know.

Thanks so much guys,

Jonathan

I'm up :)
I think the first and the third and "Boys dream #1" are the best.
Generally, I'd keep out "late night pizza" because the people "pose" to the camera. and I'll keep the color shot out (not that they're not good)
Nice pictures you've got, funnily, from the way people look and the atmosphere, I think they could have been taken in Tel Aviv .
Maybe people from different places are not so different as we tand to think

"Bus Ride" is by far my favorite image of the set. Cheerful, childish, and with great colors, this is a great snap.

The same goes for "Oh so shy." It invokes almost a yearning back to childhood naiveity (imho).

I like "A Boy's Dream (2)" over "(1)" due to the more interactive nature if the image--the boy is grabbing at the skateboard as opposed to merely looking at it. Though they both are nice, I think only one should be included to minimize repetitivity.

That makes 3. That's what I've got for you.

Oh no guys... I need it cut down to six images... only three images have to be taken out.

So if you could please help pick the ones you would cut out.

jbf, that's great you have a local gallery contest. We had one here and it only lasted one year. I wish they would bring it back. Here are my ratings: bus girl is no. 1 that was no. 7 on your list. The final 8 are from best to least best are: 1,4,2,3,5,6,8,9. Good luck with the contest. Let us know how it comes out.

ok three to cut out:
first, third, fourth.
The first...just don't like it too much, the third: i don't like that it's from behind all the people, i see what point you wnated to make but only from the title, and and and...it's just that everybody's from behind on it.
The pizza... well, dunno, it looks more like a snap of two friends of yours to record a late night pizza, not something i would consider for a competition.
Just my oppinion ;)

PS: i would focus on kids and forget the rest. Don't know what competition it is, but i would say it is always better to bubmit all shots around one central suybject/idea, instead of just six random shots tyhat you like most. And seems you have quite good shots with the kids. I especially like the last one with the sleepyhead, and the colour one.
So i would put together six around this subject (indeed repeating is also not a lucky idea, so one dream of the same boy is enough), if you have some more.

Definitely keep:

"Boy's dream No 2"
"Rendezvous Ribs"
"Oh So Shy"
The Kids in the waiting room
"Don't tell mom"

I like the Rib joint pic and the last best. Some of your exposure would benefit from an incident meter. No very snappy blacks or whites in some outdoor shots. Can't make a good print with a good neg. Good luck in the contest. P.S give the shots interresting names....judges like that.

What the hell is that supposed to mean?

Can't make a good print with a good neg?

Excuse me but if you want to degrade someone's work with a comment like "can't make a good print with a good neg", you better at least have good work to back up your attitude.

Furthermore, just because you may think it's great to crush your blacks and blow out your highlights for high-contrast B&W photographs does not mean that it is a good practice or that it is the absolutely and only way to do it.

Johnathan,
I would keep most of the pictures of the kids. With the exception of "A boy's Dream No. 1"--I like the No. 2 image better.
"Smoke Break Confession" and "Don't Tell Mom" aren't bad but aren't as appealing to me so I wouldn't use them for the competition.
So there's three suggested cuts.
So that leaves all the other kid shots and "Rendezvous Ribs"...I really like "Rendezvous Ribs" but I think the other photos play to a common theme/subject and that one doesn't fit that well. So, maybe, a fourth cut?
Are these going to be looked at as a group or as individual images?
Let us know how things turn out!
Rob

Thanks to all... i made my decisions...

And the photos are judged individually... so, cant really work around the idea of a series, etc.

LOL
jbf,
sam "bothered" to look at the images and give you a perfectly useful and well-intended response to your enquiry (for free!!)
i also don't understand what he wanted to say with that good neg stuff
BUT he was answering your question, he was wishing you good luck, he was giving you useful advice
so you were just ****in unpolite with your reaction.

it's amazing when people ask for oppinions or advices and then they cannot bear with the slightest criticism

And what he has in his gallery and how good a photographer he is, has NOTHING to do with the whole thing.

Some people are just so full of themselves here at RFF, lately.

1, 5, 7, and 8.

1. Just like it - a real-life scene without being too "street photography"-y
5. Kids playing peek-a-boo are always a winner, interesting setting
7. Bus ride - like the lines. Nice colors, good oof, sharp, cute kid
8. Just a fun "low light"-er with an interesting "real" subject.

Nice stuff overall. Like it. Thanks for asking "our" opinion and good luck.
