The past few days I've been archiving old negatives. I almost forgot about these. I didn't have a camera then, but I really wanted to be a photographer! Off to Rite-Aid I went and bought a disposable loaded with BW400CN.
After a long paddle, my subject comes into view. That's the bow of my kayak bottom right. My thumb was top left, but I cropped it out.
Looking for a way in...
Hey! Bet I can paddle in there...
Damn. This is looking sketchy. Narrow hallways and 18ft sea kayaks don't mix, and that deck has the structural integrity of an old beer can.
Out of the boat, on the upper decks, heading for the old ballroom. Good thing I don't have a photo of myself in action. I was wearing speedos, combat boots and a life vest.
Damn. The vast dark space of the ballroom defies the limited capabilities of my little camera. There were chimney swifts nested in the girders, flying in and out of the broken windows.
I went back a few more times over the years. The old ferry is gone now, and the entire coastline has been reshaped. In a year or two it will all be restored wetlands.
Thanks for looking,
Matthew
