Suggestions for M5 Viewfinder repair?

Sherry replaces viewfinders and does not repair them.
I had a similar problem with my M5 and she had two options:
replace with a new m6 finder (more expensive option) or
replace with a used m5 finder in good condition.
I chose the m5 finder option because I prefered the original configuration.
She sent back the defective finder with the camera, which I thought was pretty cool...

CRR Luton is across the pond in the UK so it's probably better to try CONUS options first. Would save a lot of money on shipping... I don't know what will be the cheaper option, swapping an entire rangefinder (with one of unknown origin) or have it overhauled completely so it's good to go for another couple of decades.

Is the viewfinder unusable? Really bad?

I had two viewfinders CLA'd at Essex in New Jersey which included getting rid of some "crazing". They came back like new. Might be worth looking at before replacing the entire finder, unless it is a total mess.

A decementing viewfinder is like a time bomb, it can go black (=unuseable) at any time or stay useable for many years. You might be lucky, or not.

Thanks for the comments, all! There's no crazing, just some square masking drifting down into the viewfinder from the upper left corner. If you turn the camera over and give it a shake, it returns home, but not for long. And I've probably adapted to whatever else subtle changes have gone on.

Cheers!

Your problem does not sound like decementing. When that happens it's a sudden event, all you see is the rangefinder patch surrounded by a field of black, and it doesn't return to normal at all. That said, I would send it to DAG. He'll fix it whatever it is, and even if it was decementing (very, very rare in any Leica past the earliest M4 bodies, as later ones--in fact, even the M2R--used light-curing optical cement for the rangefinder prism vs canada balsam) Don will re-cement the prism for less than half what it would cost to replace the rangefinder. This one area IMHO there's a clear reason to choose Don over anyone else in N. America.

Right, Ben, the problem is exactly as you described. I emailed DAG and inquired about his experience -- did you know he worked at Wetzlar? I'm impressed. It sounds like we have quite a good resource there! Sending the M5 to him asap, really appreciate the referral!
