Hi, the aperture selection ring on my 5cm Summar, seems different from the Summar l used to own, it has a small section/recess cut along it, is this unusual or indeed what is it for? thanks for any help

Not unusual. It's typical for the early design SUMMARs, the later ones do not have the recess cut into the ring.
I think it was just there to limit the throw of the ring, from minimum to maximum aperture.

thank you for sharing your knowledge it is, as ever, very much appreciated, the serial number of my Summar is 312282

lxmike, that Summar has the index mark at f2.9 and the little notch/tab that were intended for use with the early Agfa color film/filter system. Later Summars no longer had these features. Although, as shown in Lager's book, there are examples that still have the extra index mark but no notch and tab.
