Lynn, I think it's definitely worth a shot. Use pure cerium oxide powder and cotton swabs dampened in water. I worked in small circles, always moving around the surface and periodically reversing, trying to cover the lens as evenly as possible. Use as little pressure as possible. The swaged-in edges are the hardest to get at, and there's a tendency to overwork the center - just be methodical and you'll be fine.
The paste will dry quickly; I found it was best to work with small amounts of paste only until it dried, then go over it with a clean wet swab to take off the dried material, then start over with fresh cerium oxide. It's tedious, but you will see results relatively quickly. Good luck!
thanks for the explanatory notes!

Wow. I started this thread in '07. Though I enjoyed shooting the Summar, that was a lens I didn't hold on to very long. I guess you can say it was a brief Summar love. (See what I did there?) Sold it off to fund other gear purchases. Cool lens though -- lots of fun and "character" to spare. The girl with the long brown hair on the right in my sample photo is my daughter, was 12 at the time, is now all growed up, moved out, lives on her own in DC, has a FT job and going to grad school! Yeesh. Now I feel old. I am old! Oh well.

I wish there was an SLR version of the Summar. Probably the best sharpest and best 50 lens I ever shot, and I much prefer a clean Summar to a clean 50 Chron.

Tell us what leads you to that preference, Steve.

Uncoated!!! Lynn I hope that as the gentleman you are you offered to coat these two with liberal amounts of sunscreen to protect them from the deleterious effects of the sun02 Pilot, I'm impressed that you managed to hand polish the front element. The photos taken with it afterward look pretty good to me. My Summar has a very finely scratched front element and your effort (and the other samples in this thread) convinces me this would be worth a try.
Here's another from mine (uncoated):

For anyone who is interested, my Summar is listed on Ebay at the moment:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/163200460808
It's a nifty user. The glass is nice and I had it overhauled by Peter Grisaffi at CRR Luton in 2011 so it's still clean inside.
