Hi...

Got this summar from 1937.

After experiencing with it decided to make it a focsu shift test.

It´s very simple but quite accurate...

And so it has!

So i made my old recipe for dealing with this plague and left it variable optimization as i did with a few lenses in the past.

Here the results!

My sweet daughter Mariana the model!

F2 only -2/3rds comp.

I didn´t ake 100% crops it wasn´t necessary

This other was shot at 6.3 but i compensated directly the rangefinder since optimization at f2 means backfocus, so i focused a few cm before on purpose.

Have to aknowledge i used my old ficus vario-hood set between 135mm-90mm distance.

This hood really makes a huge difference...

Now i´m happy with this gem!

I need to tame it a while and i´ll get the ebst out of it in the coming days!

Hope LTM fans find this thread useful!

Bye!

Hi, i never shoot colour...just never liked digital colour and on film there are a few lenses that i like...

Looking at these pics and other taken with uncoated glasses...

...makes me think there is some forgotten wisdom about uncoated glass...

Wow, that lens is a lot sharper than I thought they were! I had a Fed Summar type, and it was so flare prone I got rid of it. Having a clean copy, and using a hood, seems to make it a fine lens. I'll have to get out my nickle Hecktor 50/2.5 and see how it does.

Monochrom, you are right you have a sweet daughter. I liked this mini review. I had a f2 Summar back when I neither cared about nor knew what focus sift, back/front focus was. I will say I agree there is a certain something to the uncoated lens.

Goamules, i had a nickel hektor it has also the same shifting at 2.5, check with a ruler and you´ll be sure what to expect from it, nice little lens for what i can tell!

Charjohncarter, thank you, i always make these tests when i get and f2 f1.5 lens...the rd1s, m8 and m9 are fantstic tools to check and optimize lenses!

Zf1, the summar is a nice piece of glass, i donñt like hoods but this time i´ll eat my words!

Ko.fe. if i may give you some advice, check RF alignment at infinity on your camera the native setting of my lens was front focus at f2 and slight back focus at 4.5 6.3, it should be giving that missfocus

Trav, the hood really really helps, thos lateral light blows almost disappear with hood!

I was thinking of making a Flickr group just to helps others to deal and take good care of focus shift...!

Thanks for the imput!

Pixel peeping with a NEX shows decent, modern-level sharpness at f/5.6, with less contrast.

I keep my Summar which is full of cleaning marks just for the taste. After all what could "glow" more than the $100 gem?

Monochrom -

Lovely pictures of your daughter !

Using the FIKUS hood at 90 or 135 setting, did you experience any vignetting with the Summar ?

Also, does you focus-**** data apply only to use on digi-cams, or with film as well ?

( I am still shooting my Leitz lenses on Barnack-bodies & fiim... )

Thanks !

LF

I got vignetting with a Summar when combining a A36 clampon filter with a FIKUS set to 50mm. I guess it'll be less noticable with a micro 4/3rd camera even with the FIKUS set for longer focal length lenses.

Nice comparisson Monochrom. The color of the images look slightly desaturated. But no complaints about sharpness from me. 🙂

A great shade for the Summar - it really needs one - is the FLQOO. A FOOKH will do too, especially when you "enlarge" it with a clamping filter with the glass removed.

Erik.
