I checked the threads and the net before posting. I'd like to use 39mm filters and accesories for all my lenses. I picked up an soogz for the ltm lenses, but I need to find an adapter for the Summarit. Was a step-down adapter ever made? I found ones to step up from e39 to e41, but that wont help. Stu

I take it an 'soogz' is another one of those famous Leica code words. My guess would be that there never was a step-down made, on the basis that people who use Leicas aren't in the business of SAVING money.

Stu, I take it that you're looking for a step-down filter for the Summarit -- 41mm to 39mm...If you can't find one, here's someone who can make you one:

http://www.skgrimes.com/slipon/index.htm

there's another place, also...Harrison & Harrison...

you ought to be able to find it, if Grimes isn't helpful...It is in Woonsocket, R.I.

I can't believe that they make an adapter to use e41 filters on an e39 camera, but not the other way around. I have a set of e41's but I'm trying not to have to carry duplicate filters in different sizes around. Leave it to Leica to make an adapter to use what is probably the most uncommon filter size on a lens with a common one!

If you get a 39mm to series VII adopter will the E41 mm filters fit?

Same site as above does series adopters.

Stu...it just occured to me that even if you found a 41 to 39mm step-down filter ring, your 39mm filters would fit but most likely would be no help with the lens wide open [to f1.5] because the filter would be in the way...The filters would probably be ok if you stop down to, say, f4 or so but the reason for the Summarit, I feel, is so that you can use it wide open...

You'll just have to get along with 39mm filters on all your lenses except the Summarit and carry 41mm filters for just that lens... [The Summitar also presents a problem because the filter thread is oval shaped and you need a special adapter for that, too, if you use a Summitar...]

What a photographer at The New York Times recommended to me 20 years ago was to get a 39mm to 49mm step-up ring -- which I did -- and use 49mm filters, which I do in addition to the 39mm ones...You can get the 39-49mm ste-ups by the gross for next to nothing and the 49mm filters as well...

Thanks for the links, but nothing there will do. I do have a ton of 49mm filters for my Pentax gear, but what I'm trying to do is just to be able to carry 1 set of filters. I dont think vignetting will be a problem as holding an e39 to the Summarit doesn't really seem to be much of a restriction. I'd like to find an old Leica accesory book, something that covers all accesories. I'm sure they made something. Just probably obscure. Stu

Hove has a Leica accessory book for about $15...Jim Lager has one for over $125...I have both and probably a few others but together they do not cover every Leica accessory... There were far too many... Your best bet is to get one made...

Brooklyn is only about 200 or so miles to Woonsocket, R.I., where Grimes is located...You could also get a lobster while you were threre, another 50 miles or so closer to the ocean...

The series adopter may accept the 41mm filters as drop in series VI 'clones', e.g. a series VII filter adopter can also accept (some) 49mm filters as drop ins. You could then mount the 41mm filters on the 39mm lenses + adopter, though it might 'screw' your hood arrangements for the 39mms.

The problem in your case is tolerances - the 41mm screw in may be too large in diameter the series VI nominal filter outer ring (40.3mm or so) drops in to a series VI adopter with a 2mm or more diameter clearance (42.5mm or so) your filters might not even drop in, but leitz filters (that I use) are normally small so you might get away with it, depending on filter and individual series ring tolerances.

There is a 2nd problem some 49mm filters are too large front to back and need grinding to reduce their depth, to allow the securing ring or hood to thread in to the adopter.

But you are desperate that you might grind leitz origionals?

You need to buy a holder or at least try to borrow a series VI holder or lens, borrowing a holder only needs to demonstrate it might fit a 2nd ring. It the filters are tight you might be selecting for an adopter larger then normal. You might accept a ring that needed filters to be pushed in?

I know my Leitz series VII kit will take some of my Oly 49mm filters, this only saves me money... it involves turning a gadget bag upside down before I set out. I have even thought about a 49mm pola filter in a 35mm rotatable lux clip in hood, this involves scrapping the 49mm pola, as I have spare linear 49mm pola filters... No sun here today so I'm not going to try this.

Joe tells me this series thing is easy...

A 39mm filter would fit into a series VI ring apart from front to back depth...
