Summer vacation: New York City and The Hamptons

I grew up in western Nassau on the south shore. Once lived in the exclusive Idle Hour section of Oakdale which use to be a part of the Vanderbuilt Estate.

Also lived in a run down hippy house in Amity Harbour where John Lennon hid his mistress (May Pay) from Yoko Ono.

For many years I hamptoned in the summer and was a bicycle bum. I hung out with the hard bodies and ultra-fit that worked on Wall Street and had beach houses. The women were pretty and needed no makeup, and their bodies were made for lycra.

I worked at Grumman and at Brookhaven National Labs doing research.

Now I live in a rat infested run down part of Long Island City in Queens and I am much happier.

I agree with many here regarding the kitchen. Though it would be nice to have a kitchen, buying grocery in the city can be expensive. Plus, there are so many great restaurants you should try out. For us, it's usually the drinks that end up costing a lot, not the food itself.

I also use L&I Photo for development. I am actually thinking to try LTI Photo which is closer to my apartment.

As far as the Hamptons is concerned, I don't think it's that bad. When I go out there, I never go to those ridiculous party places and go to more low key places and the beach is pretty nice.

Well, the trip will start in just over a week and we're very excited. We haven't found a convertible yet (seems like no car dealers have them) but have reserved a rather large car with a sunroof (for the roadtrip week). Will look more closely for a convertible tomorrow.

We also ended up following everyones advice and just staying at a Hotel. Take-outs and restaurants will be more than enough. :)

The week in the Hamptons-area we haven't planned very much, just go with the flow. Is it very difficult to get accomodation this way?

I plan on bringing my Rolleiflex and Om2n.

Nightfly: Lots of excellent suggestions! Montauk sounds nice!

Bigeye (Charlie): Thanks alot. Will take your suggestions up with the rest of the fellowship.
