Is there a good 50mm Summicron that can be had for under 500 dollars?

Yep..
Look for the 50mm "rigid" version.
It's a decent lens and while it does not have the coatings that an ASPH cron would have it's no slouch either.

I bought my -59 Summicron DR for $280 (w/o goggles) 1.5 years ago and had it cleaned by DAG for another $80 including shipping across the big pond. I haven't used it much but from what I've seen, it's very nice.
A year earlier I had a mid-70'ies version that I bought and then sold for £250 so yes, you should be able to find a 50/2 for $500.

I think with a little careful shopping you could find the 11817, which is the black lens made from 1969 to 1979. I do agree that the Rigid is a good choice, as is the optically identical DR Summicron. These are excellent for B&W work! And the Collapsible Summicron is another favorite of mine. You can get one in excellent+ condition for $300 or so.

Thanks for the link. I pick one up on evil bay last night for 419.00. I got the collapsable one. I really had my heart set on a 50's era lens.

My M5s need red dots!
I had a rigid one, and swapped it for the latest version. I like both, but then, 50mm is an uncommonly used focal length for me. However, I really like using a collapsible in my M3: the viewfinder makes the FOV look immense.
But yes, Virginia, there are Summicrons for less than $500.
