Just bumping this thread for a bit of advice.
I have the chance of a Canadian Summicron 35 made in my birth year (bless) it's a bit overpriced but not so bothered about that. I gather there is no real difference between the German and Canadian from that decade and that Leitz Canada is now Elcan the nasa fellas? Advice sought and appreciated from those in the know. Oh I am very fussy about sharpness and barrel distortion because I mainly photograph buildings (yawn).

The Canadian lens is rubbish. It will self-destruct in December, 2012.
Internet rumor/myth: When Leitz closed the Midland facility unused parts were shipped back to Germany. Lenses were assembled in Germany from Canadian parts with new lettering on the front ring. Some Made in Germany lenses may be imposters!

As for your fussyness, buy a view camera and appropriate lenses or a Hasselblad SWC.

What is the version of the Summicron 35mm you're interested in? (There are four versions of the pre-ASPH Summicron.)

My pleasure. You're welcome.
EDIT:
I was curious. Using the RFF search engine, the following terms "35mm summicron barrel distortion" returned no results. At least 1 C/V 35mm lens was associated with barrel distortion. Not the 35mm Summicron. Nor Konica and Zeiss either.

The German version has better bokeh, wide open and edge performance due to improved tolerances in mounting and aligning the lens groups. This is due to more sophisticated machining and measuring capabilities at the German factory. It is also complete b0ll0cks.

Better built, a bit smaller, less flare, bokeh in-distinguishable when comparing to v4, Michael. I don't use it any more though, for use the CV 35/2.5 PII is just as good or better

the CV 35 2.5 is undoubtedly one of their bests.
I sold mine and a canon 1.5 only to get the Hex-M which albeit a bit too big for my taste, is a great lens.
I need f/2 do switch easily to indoor situations...

Welcome.
Click on the link below to get some good price indicators. No distinction is made between German and Canadian ones.....like people said on the previous page, perhaps German ones are more sought after, but I don't imagine it makes a huge amount of difference. I'm looking for one too, btw. Something recent(ish).

Thank God for RFF!! Thank heavens for this thread.
So I see a few 35/2 Summicrons in MapCamera, like this. These are labelled '2nd', meaning, I presume, the second version. The price seems reasonable to me and have been considering.
You guys reckon that the 2nd version is good? Any sample shots in both b&w and colour?
Cheers.
