Hi,

I just bought a nice pre-asph 35mm summilux + box and hood. As fate would have it, I did not put the hood on the lens before I bought it. Now I'm at home, and the shade fits on the lens, but it rattles slightly and can be rotated without any friction. It does not matter for the pictures, but I really don't like having a rattling camera.

Is the to be expected or should I go back to the shop and make them fix it? As the lens is very compact, it's hard to find any place to tape the hood to the lens.

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

That should definitively not be the case. The hood (12504) fits very tight. Check the spring-loaded clamps in the hood, bent ? worn out ? They fit tightly into the rim of the lens, I just checked with my copy of the lens.

Just checked mine and it does rotate and does rattle a little if you shake the lens hard enough. I have never noticed it, a rattle, when photographing. I think it is just in the nature of the method it attaches to the lens by. It is the 12504 hood.

I have an old used one that came with my lux that is pretty loose, and a much newer tighter one that came with my Cron V3 - they both use the same 12504 hood.

It appears they lose a bit of tension as they age. My lux rotates easy, but doesn't rattle, but if it did start rattling, when you unscrew the vented part there are 2 tiny screws which look like they should give you access to the ring to retension.

Alternatively, you could find some tape or a rubber band to thicken the ridge diameter of your lens.

I use my lux mostly on an M8, so am actually looking for a tighter diameter hood, as I don't need a FF designed hood.

Mine has the same problem as the OP. After enough rattling (which I ignored) the hood actually fell off. Has happened a few times. The remedy is what ampguy mentioned: tighten the tiny screws.

In my particular 12504 sample the face of one of the screws is "screwed up" (sorry for the pun) and I can't tighten that one at all. Fortunately the other screw is still OK and when my sample starts to rattle during use I tighten that one. However my inability to tighten both screws might explain why my sample rattles over and over again. In the one year I used the 12504 + 35 lux combo extensively, I think I must have retightened the screw two or three times.

I have had two 1504 hoods one on my pre asph summilux the other on my v3 summicron. The summicron one was loose like you talked about. My current one is not. I'd see if they can fix it or replace it.

I bought a different hood for mine. The current cron 35 asph hood, 12526; I put a thin black hair rubber band into the groove so the hood doesn't rotate. I bought 125 of them at the dollar store for a buck. Easy fix.
