First post here, a quick question: When the MP was launched in 2003, a couple of BP lenses were availble, including the Summilux 50 pre-ASPH. Was this the version with the scallop-style focusing ring, or is there another recent BP Summilux 50?

Have you looked into the lens to confirm it is a 60's formulation. I'd be surprised that Leitz would have been able to go back to the 60s. The post '79 is much easier to build, the Ru designers looked at it and groaned, and then copied.
I thought Leitz cheated whatever their litrature might have implied..., e.g. is the later lens unit separable?

This brings some pondering about. Why did the good people of Solms choose to only work on the focusing range, and not adopt ASPH elements in the 50 Summilux in 1995? (ASPH elements were readily available at thism time.) Given the apparent quality of the 50 ASPH Summilux, one would think that Solms would be eager to launch it as soon as possible. Is the lead time for development of ASPH lenses the factor in this? Or did Solms start to favour a more contemporary approach to lensmaking (and aesthetics) in the early years of the new millenium? One wonders....
