Summilux Focusing Trouble

I noticed on a trip interstate recently that my pre-ASPH summilux 1.4 (as can be seen here: http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30362&page=41)
would not focus far enough away. On the same trip while unscrewing a filter what could best be described as the "front element tube" came unscrewed - as in I was holding too much of the lens and not enough of the filter. I promptly screwed it up tight again so the f/stop markings matched the dot. Further careful fiddling later showed that the next tube along could also be unscrewed. They didn't take much pressure to move and I made sure I didn't unscrew them to the point of letting dust or anything inside the lens...

My question is why can you unscrew them like that... I mean obviously it needs to be able to be cleaned and serviced somehow but that's a bit unsettling... and also what is the deal with the not focusing to infinity thing? Of course, I have considered it's the M6 body, but that has been ruled out as my auntie's summicron-c 40mm focuses on the same star that the summilux could not. (just to clarify, i was using stars (or planets?) as focus tests.)
Thanks a lot in advance,
William.
