Hi Brian and all who reading and can help 🙂
Couple days ago I bought 1949 Summitar. Perfect lens, but focusing ring is very stiff. So, I decided to clean helix and lube it with lithium grease. According this site
http://justinlow.com/articles/repair-leica-summitar
it's pretty easy job. But my Summitar is different (compare my attached photo and photos from link above). It has two pins. After unscrewing 3 screws it's still impossible to remove the mount :bang: I can't remove these pins. And when I tried to push it down, no results too.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
p.s.: and sorry for my litauenglish 😀

I looked at my Parts Summitar- and it is different from the Summicron in LTM that I disassembled.

Same problem that you ran into: the three screws at the back come out, and the ring is held in place by what must be two screws put in from the inside of the mount. Looking at it, it "seems" like the serrated ring of the focus mount should come off. I can see the seem. It would not come off with a rubber cork or pad.

I'm going to see what other tips I can google.

I'll be watching this thread as the two Summitars I have and one has the pins and the other does not. Would be nice to know how to repair them in the future.

Well- until this gets figured out, the "cheat"- the threads of the Summitar are exposed at the back. Focus to infinity, see the rear portion of the threads. You can work a little lighter fluid into the back to loosen things up. Work it back and forth, clean the old grease as it comes out the back.

Not the greatest, but better than nothing.

The Summitar/Summicron with just the three screws: easy. Take off the three screws, the rear ring comes off. Helical exposed. Trick is to start it at the correct point when putting back on, so MARK it when taking apart.

I havn't actually pulled the rear of mine apart yet, much for the same reason (the 3 screws did not lead me to a dismantled lens!)

Try this link though, it might be of help:

http://books.google.com.au/books?id...&resnum=1&ved=0CDoQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q&f=false

"The helical threads in the focusing unit can be separated by removing the three screws from the bottom flange. If further disassembly is required, you must unscrew the serrated ring with the aid of a rubber sheet using your hand only. The inside barrel itself is not threaded, it is retained by a threaded ring at the front of the unit (see photo 4.7)."

I tried the rubber sheet with the serrated ring- did not budge.

I will try some lighter fluid to loosen it up, give another try. I'm sure the Summicron-M collapsible uses these three screws threaded from the inside, as none are visible from the back. So the serrated ring is the culprit!

Thank you kpas for the link and to the OP for asking the question in the first place.

I don't know if your question was for me or not but I have not taken my Summitars apart to lube them for smoother focussing. I am just filing the info for later. The one lens is from 1949 and has the pins with the other being from 1951 w/o the pins.

Well... The problem is solved. And it solved in not very elegant way 😀
Sometimes I do very stupid things.
I just drilled out these pins with 1.4mm drill!!! Yes, dear Leica fans, I did it 😀
Firstly, I tried to remove serrated ring. No results. It sits very tight. After short online research I decided to DO IT on my own risk. To drill. And what can I said... This is the one and only way to remove the mount. I absolutely can't understand the role of these two pins. They do nothing! And they pressed down not from inside (I mean serrated ring side), but from outside (mount side). The holes for pins is drilled only 1.5-2mm deep. And one and only way to press it to this part is from mount side. Very strange decision of 40's Leitz engineers. It reminds me my Renault car 😀. By the way, when I tried to find more info about Summitar disassemble, I found one lens which looks like after the same execution:

So, I'm not alone 🙂
Hope it will help anyone
