Hello,

Anyone tell me where can i get a cap for my summitar? how much should i expect to pay?

It came with some sort of kodak filter adapter and instead of a filter in place, the previous owner had inserted a piece of black canvas!

Also, any recommendation on a case for a IIIC? mine didn't come with an original case and i think it'll be too big anyway to slip into a coat pocket.

oh... and anyone have a "template" for cutting the film?

i'm gearing up for when it comes back from the CLA.

somewhat off topic... i'm wondering if i'm spending way too much on a IIIC and summitar in good condition - body is free from dings but minor wear and scratches. vulcanite is intact. some separation on the edge of the summitar.
Cost me $260 and now the CLA $190.

Unfortunately the Summitar caps (any Leica caps) are outrageously expensive; expect to pay something between $30-50 for it (yes, that's in US dollars).

That is a lot to have spent on a Summitar, imo. I got mine for $250, already CLA'd. The CLA sounds outrageously expensive, what did they do, polish and recoat it too? Or was that for the IIIc?

Do a search on ePrey (bay), the caps pop up often. Good luck!

Erm, $260 was for both IIIC and Summitar. Price for the CLA of both. no polish or recoat.

Hi atelier7, congratulations on the IIIc/Summitar-

I've used this combination regularly for 2 years & haven't felt the need for a film cutting template, altho' others on the forum may disagree. In fact I don't trim the film leader at all & haven't had any misloads to date. Think a number of previous threads have dealt with failsafe "bottom loading"

I know this doesn't really help you compare costs of CLAs, but mine was done by CRR in the UK for 140 pounds for the body alone; that works out approximately $250

If the filter adapter you got is one that allows use of E39 filters it would be v. useful as Summitar filters, although fairly easy to find are often more expensive thatn the more common "standard" E39.
As for cases, you could try looking for a IIIf case on the bay; they come up quite frequently & will fit the IIIc.

Caps, as have been pointed out are pricey. You could try e-mailing Manfred Schmidt to see if he has one http://www.manfredschmidt.com/

Cheers
David

Does the summitar take the leica 36mm screw in filter?

i'm confused. what filter should i be looking for to directly put on the summitar without an adapter? is it not the 36mm leica screw in filter? or is there a special one?

Welcome to Leicadom. Your poor Zorki 3M will fit a bit neglected when the IIIc gets back from repair. I use Kaiser caps, because the stay on in the camera bag, which is not always true for Leica metal caps.

Cheep lens Cap for Summitar

Cheep lens Cap for Summitar

The cheepest lens cap you can buy is a Dole Orange Juice. Remove the cap, get a pocket knife, and carve away the threads. It fits prefectly, and you can adjust tightness to your own pleasure. This trick also worked for my 90/4 collapsible elmar. When your done don't forget to drink your orange juice! It's good for you 🙂

i'm now too poor to buy juice. I bought an original cap for $30 after watching the bay fo the longest time. gave up after narrowly missing one for $15 the other day. the IIIC just came back from the CLA spa today ... it looks nicer than i remembered it. meanwhile, the zorki 3m is on its way from sydney to nevada! i just bought a 36mm leica yellow 2 screw on filter on the bay for $6... but if i'm interpreting your answers correctly, i've bought the wrong filter for the summitar! arrrgh! hmmm... i'm wondering if all this effort is worthwhile, especially when my summitar has very slight separation. i really hope it doesn't affect the image. then again, i'm not experienced enought to tell if the quality has degraded if it's only very slight. maybe i should just sell it and stick my minty J8 on it instead!

atelier7, the Summitar lens takes special, for Summitar only, screw in filters. I may have some duplicates once a package arrives for me, hopefully this week. Will let you know.
