Hey Rick,
Did you go to the Arnhem weekend? I was in London and saw a Spitfire & Hurricane on their way back from the event. Sunday morning with a hint of cloud - heard the Merlin way before I saw the iconic shape. Very nostalgic.

I did not participate in any of the week-long events around Operation Market Garden. I'm out of off-days and money. Plus there was quite a bit of bumping egos and trouble concerning all the required permits from the Dutch regional police.
That said, some of the photos I've seen of both Project 70 and OMG 2014 looked fantastic.

Shame - I guess it's not just the beaurocrats that get in the way, there is always someone who thinks he is "more equal than you". Hang on - isn't that what started all the fuss in the first place?

Helen - I think your gas line shot is one of my favourites of the past few years. You should buy another Summitar (I intend to)

rodt16s, I've had the pleasure of shooting some APX100 in large format (expired a decade ago). Nice contrasty film, which I also see in your results.
It definitely has a different look and feel than my usual HP5
Still have some APX left in the fridge and shoot with it occasionally, but the slower speed doesn't fit with my natural ability for camera shake..:bang:
Shame I quite like the look

ha took your advice
i asked Dan Tamarkin to take a few shots wide open of a 1943 coated 10 blade summitar... wanted to see if the bokeh would lean towards Creamy or Crazy swirly
Love the look on digi so Film will make me swoon

Helen,
I'm sorry if I caused any difficulty with your bank manager
That looks like a great example of this great lens. I'm looking for a nice one, but not rushing - I have some stuff to sell first.
I think we will all be looking forward to your work with the new lens

Helen, et al -
You mentioned a 10-blade Summitar from 1943 - would this be the version that uses the "wonky" hexagonal aperture group from the Summar, or the later, more conventional iris arrangement ?

Well, the oof in the photo from Tamarkin looks decent...
I just picked-up a coated post-war Summitar with a Leica II-c upgraded to III- f BD ST while in Denmark on holiday. Still waiting for the films to come-back from the lab... hoping to great-goodness that the shutter curtains in the camera are ok... shot (7) rolls of 36 exp Porta 160 with it !

I think both versions have the crazy swirly bokeh but the 10 blade is more oval shaped. Whats wrong with crazy swirly anyways ? Hellen, it looks like the bokeh in the picture that Dan sent you is a little swirly but this is the signature of the Summitar I thought. I own one but I am a bit swirly myself

I believe I recall reading the same, somewhere… that both versions produce basically similar OOF. Not certain, though. My 1950 coated Summitar is the only one I own and it has the later, hex-shaped iris. I can say that it produces fairly swirly OOF highlights in the most extreme cases, e.g. the examples I recently posted in the "ultimate bokeh" thread. With lots of small, bright OOF highlights in the background, and using the maximum aperture, you're going to see some of the swirly stuff. Not as pronounced as with a Summar, however.
As the photo from Tamarkin shows, with a different type of background subject and lighting the Summitar's OOF rendering is not wacky at all.
Now, I'm not bothered by the swirly stuff but I know others are…
