For some lenses good hoods are either nonexistant or way too expensive. I think that quite presentable hoods could be made using step-up rings as the "foundation". Does anyone know a good way to determine what the diameter of a hood shoud be?

Did you mean diameter or length of hood? A rule I use for length of hood is the hood should equal the focal length of lens. 100mm lens gets 100mm long hood. Diameter of hood would be limited by rangefinder window obstruction caused by the hood.

This Excel spreadsheet may help. It is a calculator for maximum hood length given film format, focal length, front glass diameter, and hood front inner diameter. I found this couple of years back. The calculation looks accurate.

P.S. The "Lens Front Outer Dia" is the diameter of the front glass.

Heavystar's hoods are excellent. I have two and my latest is a 46mm wide-angle hood to replace a huge vented hood that came with a 28mm M-Hexanon lens. No vignetting, excellent build quality, and comparatively small. Cost is also small: $7. 🙂
