Fuji Pro400 and Superia 400 (4th color layer/X-tra) are the same film.
I repeat, the same, the only difference is packaging, and as somone mentioned, it is cold stored from the factory to Pro dealers. Superia shows up in a box next to diapers and tylenol.
I heard this from the Horses mouth, when i still had a hookup at Fuji's Hawaii distribution center.
I wouldn't stress it at all.
Superia works great in all light, and with flash.
Interesting to read that about Superia 400 X-TRA having the 4th colour layer. The data sheets on the Fujifilm USA website certainly show a 4th colour layer for both Superia 400 X-TRA [CH] (not sure what the [CH] indicates) and Pro 400H, which lends credence to the claim they are the same film.
But the story is a bit different on the Fujifilm Japan website. The data sheets for now discontinued Superia 400 Venus and the current Pro 400H both show a 4th colour layer, but the 4th colour layer is absent in the data sheets for the new films Superia 400 X-TRA and Superia 400 Premium which went on the market in Japan just a few years ago.
Could it be that Fujifilm currently makes two different flavours of Superia 400 X-TRA - one for the local market and one for export? Or could it be that Superia 400 X-TRA [CH] was actually rebadged Superia 400 Venus and was discontinued to be replaced with Superia 400 X-TRA (no [CH]), and the data sheets on the Fujifilm USA website are just out of date?

Portra has better latitude.

Although I prefer the Kodak Golds I use plenty of Fuji Superia 200 and 400 color film.
My only complaint about Fuji is I get a magenta cast that is very difficult to correct out. It's as if the blues and yellows are suppressed in that film.
But I would rather shoot 3 rolls of Superia than 1 roll of Portra.
If I'm spending over $3 a roll I like Ektar.

Great film. Two stops over, sure. But I also like the effect of 1 stop under for a more intense blue sky sometimes. For someone raised on Kodacolor 400 for a fast film, I can't see any grain with Superia. Haven't used flash.

Thanks for the follow up!
Very interesting data, I wonder why Fuji would drop the 4th color layer.
Possibly an improvement somewhere in the manufacturing process dubbing that 4th layer a luxury, would love to hear more.

I have to say the Superia 400 shots posted above look goregeous. Has anyone shot Superia 400 and Pro400H side by side to confirm what folks here are saying about the emulsions being the same? Seen comparisons on blog posts, Flickr etc?

I've shot them both, not side by side, but they are not the same emulsion.
I'm out of both otherwise I'd do the test for you.
Maco, my go-to film supplier for film hasn't been able to get Pro400H in 35mm for quite a long time now. Anyone know what's happening?

Superia was my first foray into film a few years back and the first roll I shot was horrid. Grainy and the colour was way off. I suspect the film really does not take kindly to underexposure. It's a bit apples to oranges, but I fared better with Kodak Gold 200.
I still have a nearly a brick of the Fuji X-TRA in the fridge. I should shoot more.

Thanks for the offer, but just as well my curiosity has been piqued. Next time I put in an order of film, I'll get one of each and see what happens.

... now, I sort of did the same and thought they were so close it wasn't worth paying for the pro version
