The defensiveness that I have seen on the part of the reviewers is part of the problem. A simple "Yeah, I f*cked up, should have seen that" would go a long way to calm the waters. The attacks are overboard, but so is the defense.

But really, the signs of the IR problem were there. Didn't anyone notice?... I didn't.

Sean had the camera for just a matter of days before he started publishing the results of his tests. He made no secret of that. He made it precisely clear exactly what tests he had done, and described clearly and honestly how they turned out. The fact that these tests did not immediately show the issues should not be held against him. The fact that one of the M8 issues - the "magenta cast / IR filter" problem, can actually be discerned in a few of his test pix, with hindsight, is irrelevant. In contrast, I do find it strange that after going through the entire product development cycle, Leica seems not to have been aware of these matters. However, they have now come out with a clear statement they are doing something about it. There seems there is a good chance there will eventually be a fix. Just to put it on record (again), there are several issues:
1 Magenta cast / IR filter question;
2 Unreliable auto WB (may be related to #1);
3 Banding caused by blown highlights;
4 Green ghosts;
5 An explanation of the 8-bit DNG controversy.
I *think* that's it.

every camera has it's 60-90% of satisfaction range where the pictures look really great.

It's the job/challenge of a "professional" reviewer to review the 10-40% and comment on that .... to look for it's weaker points so to speak.

Looks like there *may* be two more problems.

1. Out of focus areas due to the different focus points of visible and IR light will cause lack of sharpness even in B&W images, requiring filters even for B&W

2. IR filters on wide angle lenses cause cyan shifts in the corners due to blocking of high-angle red light.

People are exploring these issues over on the Leica board (and maybe here too, I'm getting a little overwhelmed keeping up with it all as I decide whether to take delivery or not....I shoot all very wide and B&W.

IR light will register on the sensor. So when you focus for visible light, and you're not using an IR filter, the IR light will be out of focus in the final image.

This is depressing. I just dropped 4800 on a camera that reportedly shoots like a science experiment. I also dropped a grand on a lens to go with it. I'm NOT going to buy a stupid filter and worry about blooming etc. Leica needs to offer paid shipping slips to every m8 owner and offer whatever retro fits or camera replacements necessary to make this right. If I am not confident that this is going to occur my camera is going right back where it came from. I just spent the last three months trying to get my D200 right and today it finally is. I wont go through five trips back to the factory again. I will give them one chance for total satisfaction and that is it.
