Sure are a lot of R-D1"s for sale lately

People who dont own Rd1, dont seem to know what they are talking about. It is so many things. To example, rangefinder function, small size etc.

For my purposes anyway the RD1s is an amazingly good camera - I'm actually consistently astonished at the great quality of the output. I never crop an image - always composing in the viewfinder - so I honestly never feel the need for more pixels. I generally don't need to print at magazine spread sizes - like the vast majority of amateurs, in fact.
And the ergonomics simply have to be the best of any digital camera built so far - the fewest clicks or menu settings I've ever experienced. Simply film-like dial-choices, manual focussing and manual exposure (if one chooses).

Furthermore, the high ISO grain is so nice that I've been trying to get more of it - difficult, as I also like to use very bright lenses wide open for narrow slices of DOF.

I'm also concerned about the long-term reliability - but as far as resale prices are concerned, I can definitely see that the Epson has held up much better than most digital cameras, and I definitely haven't seen anywhere near as many RD1's for sale as M8's recently. While in Denmark I even saw that the major camera store in Copenhagen had slashed 10000 danish crowns (over $2000) off the price of their brand new M8's last week.

I think the RD1 is doing rather well in fact.
 
I love my RD1. period.

Leicasniper is the devil's advocate in this thread; I think that is his point he he; leave him alone: This is beginning to sound like an RD1 support group.
 
I will throw in my lot with the R-D1 lover camp. Wherever I go with it I always get favorable comments from people, including waiters in restaurants who say things like "Nice camera." Every time I shoot it, I wonder why I bother with film. I am getting close to thinking medium format is the only justification for film if you own an R-D1. It is just so film-like.

So how's it better than an M8? Quiet, reliable, even better image quality - people smile and feel relaxed when they see what looks like a traditional film camera. I enjoy every minute of using it. (Except when I'm using an MP).

The RD1 is very nice: I do not wish to discourage anyone. But there are lots of good cameras out there, and I wouldn't want to discourage their users either (except for the ones who think that their camera is THE ONLY CAMERA ANYONE NEEDS OR SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO BUY).

I started this thread and I know think the reason there were several R-D1's for sale; it is just coincidence. Two observations: They all got sold pretty quickly and they sold for about $100-200 cheaper than a few months ago or there was pressure to go a little lower because of the amount of units up for sale. So we keep trucking.
BTW I have no bone to pick with anyone, but I do think Leicasniper is getting a rise off of baiting us R-D1 users. My wife teaches 7th grade. When a kid does that she just ignores it, no response.

Right true, Roger, I have owned maybe 12 rangefinders of various makes over the decades. each one was the best camera ever made. Each one! LOL.😀😀

After reading through this entire thread, I came to this sentence and it gave me cause for a great chuckle; thanks George 😉

FWIW, I think that Leicasniper is not saying anything for/against the RD1 qua camera at all; as I read his comments as being economic in nature, merely about the resale value of an older digital RF. I think many of his views about digital resale value can be applied to the M8 as well.

Reality is that most members on this forum/thread do not really care about money or resale value or we would be talking about the latest D60. You think and breathe like a pro photographer. If Zeiss comes up with a 3000$ DRF that is better than the RD1, I will buy it and I will keep the RD1 because $1500 🙄really do not make a difference, I don't make my living with photography.
 
i used a professional photographer today. he's always quite busy, but i was patient and able to sneak in between customers. i'm not really sure what megapixels he shoots at, but i was quite satisfied with the results. all i had to do was put a few euros in the slot and voilà!

It should be stated that Leicasniper has been with us before under a different alias--sitemistic.

So it should be no surprise of his bias and general attitude.
 
Oh yeah, I've a bet that there's another infamous member posting under a different name these days. Any guesses?😛
 
It is really a shame we have people like leicasniper on this forum who troll posts just to create fights. You have absolutely no basis for your arguments that the Epson RD1 is inferior to any camera on the market. In the hands of a happy, comfortable, talented photographer; used in the appropriate situations, amazing pieces of visual art can be made with this camera - today and many years from now. It delivers a different experience and aesthetic than many digital cameras.

You can argue its obsolescence and inferiority until the cows come home. But if you believe that a great picture is made by the latest and greatest technology - than you still have a lot to learn about the craft of photography.
 
I've enjoyed reading this thread up until the last few posts and it's now showing signs of being a dead albatross around the neck of RFF.

A mod needs to lock it before the name calling escalates into something really unpleasant!
 
This is a classic "straying discussion". Someone made a not-so-accurate description, and the other responded to that, and then there were more not-so-accurate descriptions made during this bouncing back and forth, and in the end it led us somewhere no one intended to go in the very beginning.

The good thing is that there are many points made clear in this thread, about why R-D1 users love and choose it, including myself. I say let's just make peace and stop here. There's no one in this thread that's going to sell his R-D1 anyway.
