I have been reading one of Haruki Murakami's novels recently which always include surreal plot themes. That got me to thinking about Surrealism in Japan and I have spent some time recently reading what I could find on-line about the subject, particularly in regard to photography. There are references to the work of Kansuke Yamamoto and other pre- and post-war artists, but none really feature much depth, and a lot of articles suffer from poor Japanese to English translation. There are some good but brief discussions available in connection with past exhibits at modern art museums in New York and San Francisco. I was surprised to find that I did not come across any references to the fact that many representational techniques found in Japanese art going back centuries were adopted by the surrealist photographers. I would be interested in recommendations of books about Surrealism in Japan, including the early period and later, with good quality reproductions of the works.
