Has any one used one of these cheap $100.00 SVP negative and slide scanners found at amazon? I am looking for a quick scanner for viewing my negs and maybe printing a half decent (doesnt have to be great) small print. If you used one, whats your opinion? Thanks

I've never used one but I've seen a number of scanners that are similar on Craigslist for less than half the cost you're talking about. If you're planning on posting to Flickr, Facebook, Myspace or printing a 4x6 and no bigger it will likely work fine for that. You're obviously not expecting high quality artwork grade stuff coming out of it.

Check out the reviews.

Thanks cabbiinc. On Amazon, Svp has a bunch of these scanners in different flavours and prices but I think they all have the same guts. I think the scanner is equivelent to 5 megapixels. I can get one delivered taxes in for $80.00. I know they are junky but they are fast and I am hoping good enough for viewing my negs. If I like a frame then I would take it to a lab and get a good scan done. In my head this sounds like a good idea, If its junk I think I can return it.

The biggest thing I would pay attention too on the reviews is
a) "horrible color" repeated over and over and not just by one review
b) "slooooowwww" repeated over and over and not just by one review
c) "software doesn't run on the latest OS and never will" without another reviewer saying otherwise

Just about any other response could likely be lived with.
Also keep in mind that the 5mp scanners usually only resolve about 3mp worth of sharpness. But honestly that's not a deal breaker for web use and small prints. How often have we heard that megapixels are mostly hype anyways? Now it's time to put it to the test.
