sweet little thang in the mail...

Ok, so my sexy little M6 TTL just got here today and as its my very first leica ever, Ive got a question or two just to make sure its on the up and up. The seller(via photo.net) reported that it had a DAG MP finder ugrade one year ago, so I assume nothing should be too much out of the ordinary.

My quesstions are mostly in reference to sounds it makes, which as a newcomer to the Leica realm Im unfamiar with.

60th and up sound just fine, nice and crisp

30th and 15th have a solid sounding "thwap"(or whatever the noise should be written as) followed by like a wispering delicate sound of something falling back into place. Its consistant, and very subtle. Its more pronounced at 15th and is almost like something falling back into place bouncing once and then settling.(and oddly enough, I just noticed it doesnt do it with the camera inverted. . . huh)

8th and below have the sort of buzzing timer sound but it continues for a moment after the shutter closes, kinda winding down to a stop. And again, not nearly as noticable when inverted(although barely audible still.)

Other than that nothing strikes me as out of the ordinary. Looks clean as a whistle, ever so slight wear on the base, but nothing significant. Anyways, tell me what you think. Im glad to be part of this mess.

You will grow to REALLY love the camera. I bought an M7 a few months back after NEVER shooting 35mm film (only digital for many years) and now I do not even want an M8. I bought an MP to go with my M7 and a Noctilux to go with my 50 cron. Im broke but happy 🙂 Have fun with it!

Ha. Well, Im 23, about out of College, and bought this with money earned shooting for my school paper and whatever odd freelance gig comes my way. For now ive got free access to all the EOS 1D's and 2.8L glass my happy little hands can reach, so I figured Id better get an M under my belt before I graduate and have a 5d, or a Mark II tempting me for work.(although my degree and likely any job for about 5 years is far from photography) Im also far from a nocti, and if I had that kind of $$ laying around Id likely spend it on travelling with the gear I already have. . . hopefully. Not that Im criticising. Preaching about spending too much on camera gear after buying anything Leica is about as hypocritical is it comes.

Anyways, I havent even had time to put any film through it, but Im already in love.

That second "whrrr" sound that trails off between the first and second shutter curtain closing on slow speeds is the escapement mechanism. It is essentially, the "timer" counting down. Think of your Leica as a fine Swiss watch; mechanical perfection. Enjoy.

The M3 makes the same sounds.

When you're really familiar and have used your cameras enough you can recognizes the shutter sounds. There's the slow, deliberate whiz of the 1/30th, and, of course, the playful and slinkish 1/15th, that sounds like music to the ears. 😉
