Yes, I'm getting myself an M8. Selling a lot of stuff for it but after reading a bit on this forum I think it's a wise decision. There's a shop in Holland that sells 'demos' for 1850 euro ex vat with two yr Leica global warranty. I don't know if it's demo or refurbished but considering the warranty I think it's a safe deal.
Now, two questions at this moment that I'd like your help for:
- how can I determine the number of shutter actuations on the M8 ?
- will the DR Summicron mount ok on the M8 ? Can the goggles be used ?

if you shot a jpeg the exif will have an hex nr. alot of 000000000000xxxx. the last numbers/letters will tell you the shutter actions if you convert them to decimal (which is easily done with the mac calculator, i think the one in windows will do fine as well). the shutter is suppost to hold for like 100 000 actions so i don't really think that is a problem. if the camera is in good shape and you have that good warranty it should be a shafe bet 🙂

i just got an m8 myself with only 7200 actions and it's a great camera. really love the feal of it. but it is indeed a lot more money than a m4/3 and it is bigger...

Can't offer any help re the Summicron. To follow up on k.a's comment on shutter actuations. The field that you want in the EXIF is labeled "Image Unique ID". If you've got Bridge you'll find it in the fields listed as Camera Data. Be sure and convert from hex to decimal. The number also includes all shutter clicks made during testing at Solms which, I think, usually runs in the 50 -75 range.
 
The DR Summicron WILL NOT mount on the M8. The internals of the lens prevent it from locking into place. Buy a "bad glass" Type 1 Rigid Summicron. The optics modules are interchangeable.

yes, this is what I also found containing the shutter counter. it does not reset, even if camera shutter counter (one of menu options) is reset.

if you go for M8, and have older lenses without coding, check also this and this 🙂
 
I sold my R-D1 & got an M8 in January with shutter count of about 3800. No regret, no doubt, R-D1 is also a great camera, the image resolution is much better on M8 & I like the handling, just like my M6.

I learned this the hard way. Thankfully, I was able to sell the DR for exactly what I'd put into it.

The great irony is I now have an M2 on the way that I could have mounted the DR onto.

Did the demo's got a refurb? Or are the just being sold on "as is"?
I've got a demo and it has around 2500 pictures I didn't make according to the hex method.
if the original price was around 5000 and I paid 1400, those 2500 shots must be some of the most expensive pictures ever made with an M8 😀

Good Move. I love Mine.
On the 50 DR. It has a second focusing cam for close focus. If you don't have the eyes or don't use it for close focus, you can have the close focus cam cut down and the DR will work fine.
I had one and did that. It worked great on the M8 and I kept it until I bought the Pre Asph Summilux from you. I still have it and it stays on the M8.

That sounds very good indeed. I am in Germany but know of no deals like that here. Is this an online shop or a local mom-and-pop store?

The price I mentioned is ex VAT. Full price is 2145 euro. They told me today they have 'several in stock'.

I had mine from them. It's probably new, being sold as a demo camera. Don't know why, but mine was the same.

Did you sell that Canon 50 1.5 yet? I might be interested, to help fund your M8 🙂
 
The DR Summicron WILL mount on the M8 and work perfectly, except only in close focus range. If you can find an ugly rigid summicron the optical unit of the DR will unscrew and can be used at infinity with the rigid focusing helical. This is what i do. If i need the close focus i just change out the optical unit. No cutting of the close focus cam on the already low production DR Summicron necessary. Ouch.
