Australia/New Zealand Sydney Australia RFF Meet Up

OK, I'm calling for a 3-day World Wide RFF Symposium to be held in scenic Sydney, the San Francisco of the South Pacific, with such topics as
Day 1: Street: What, if anything, is Street?, Criticism - forthright and uncompromising vs trash talk, and How to get lucky at timing.
Day 2: Collecting: GAS or ruthless culling, eBay counselling, Brassing, is it good for you, and RFF classifieds - a menace to society.
Day 3: Pressing global issues: Tribalism and regionalism in photography genres, Digital - what is it good for?, Back lighting, contre-jour and veiling flare, it's all the same, and Being published makes you better.
Competition section would include: Fastest manual focus, Running and gunning with no motor drive, Regional Clubs - fight! These comps will be qualification heats for the 2016 Chrome Plated/Black Painted Camera Olympics.
Papers are invited and suggestions for other topics and events will be considered by the organising committee.
Nominations for membership of the organising committee is also open.

One week to go! Is there any truth to the rumour that anyone caught shooting with a DSLR will have to pick up the tab?

Bobkonos is now in Sydney, and Thursday 19th is definitely on. So far we have:
Ong
Mfunnell
Deerstalkr
Vladimir
Seajak (a bit later)
River, maybe
Paolo Bonello
Johnmcd
Lynnb
Me
That's a great sounding turnout, but if anyone else is seeing this for the first time, then do join. It's just a fun get together for yarning and carrying-on, some picture making and a good dinner somewhere. Partners are very welcome too. Indeed, they are encouraged.
We'll meet from 4 pm at Jet Bar-Cafe, south end of Queen Victoria building, ground floor, and probably sit till 5.30 and start walking somewhere (The Rocks or Chinatown, to be decided by consensus).
People can PM me for my mobile if they are going to be later than 5.30 pm.
See you all then. Hope more can join us.
Users of DSLRs will suffer no consequences as long as it's older than 2002.

Peter,

I should be able to make the Jet Bar by 5.30. If not I'll give you a call to see which direction your heading.

cheers,
clay

Bumping this to remind everyone of tomorrow afternoon: from 4 pm Jet Bar-Cafe, Queen Victoria Building. We'll be the mob with all the black and chrome cameras on the table. If you'e going to be later than 5.30 then pm me or email me (pycyeh at gmail etc) for my phone number.
Don't be shy, come one, come all. Don't worry if you haven't posted to this thread yet.

Enjoy the meet, but too far from Perth for a one off visit! Getting ready for the old farts' global bucket trip at the end of the month: Canada, UK, Greece, Italy and Singapore. Will take M 240 and DLux 109. Lenses are a problem: thinking both Tri Elmars plus 24 lux. Any thoughts?

As another 'old fart' my advice would be to go as light as possible, camera and one or maybe two lenses. Back in the day my travel kit (in fact my only kit) was an M6 with 35 'cron and 90 TE. I spent a month in Laos during January this year, traveling with carry-on only (a large day-pack, 7kgs only on Air-Asia). I had planned to take only the M6 and CV 50/2.5 but ended up buying a Fuji X-E1 and using it with the 35 'cron. Sure there were times I could have used something wider or longer but I still managed to bring home some wonderful memories and and the advantages of traveling so light far outweighed the disadvantages, especially for us 'old farts':D. One Bag is a useful resource for lightweight travel.

cheers,
clay

Hugivza, I'm sorry you're not including Sydney on your bucket trip! You'd have got a hundred responses of sage advice from our table I'm sure.
I have the 2 tri-elmars too, but I've yet to take them on a trip. I think they'd be wonderful, and with the 24/1.4 you're covered for fast at night. The only thing I'd be considering for myself is if I'd use 16 and 18 mm enough to warrant bringing the WATE, especially if I had a 24 in the bag. So maybe just MATE and 24/1.4 for me. Actually, I'd probably just bring the MATE and use the good high ISO of the M240 for night time. I love thinking about these things....
Good luck with your travels. The itinerary sounds great.

Clay, Peter, thanks for your sage advice. My wife bought me the DLux 109 to avoid me either looking like, or requiring a pack mule. It has a 1.7 Vario-Summilux which goes from 24 to 75mm. Results so far have been impressive and it is certainly convenient. Since I will be shooting mainly landscapes and architecture, I think on reflection that I will take the WATE and either the 21 or 24 Lux and use the 109 for anything else.

We will be away for 2 1/2 months so there will plenty of time to experiment. Although I have travelled extensively in my career, on my retirement last year my wife wanted to see places that I had visited, as well as places that would be new to us both. She is a muso, so concerts and opera houses will be high on the list, as well as her playing with friends in Canada, and in the UK.

Thanks for the advice - watch this space!

Enjoy the Sydney meet!

John

OK everyone, last call for tonight - 4 pm till late, as they say, meet at Jet Bar-Cafe, QVB.
Hugivza, I like your thinking. Wide and wider. Great sounding trip you and your Mrs. Hugivza have planned.

Have a great night everyone. If any of tonight's attendees see this post in time, say hello to Bob (aka bobkonos) for me! And tell him needs to feed his shelf queen Nikon SP 2005 some film!!

Hope you had a good night guys. Terribly sorry I couldn't make it and didn't update. Was my intention to come along but I've been out of action for a few days with a stomach virus and only just realized tonight was the 'Sydney meetup', in fact I only just realized today was Thursday.

Sorry to hear about the bug Paolo, there will always be a next time! Here's some snaps from today (I couldn't stay for dinner):

Lynn, what great photos and thanks for putting them up so quickly. It was a great pity you couldn't stay for dinner. I had a super time with everyone, and Bob and Louise said to me afterwards how much they enjoyed the evening.
Paolo, sorry you couldn't make it, and sorry to hear you haven't been well. We need to make these meets a regular thing. I'm sorry too that Deerstalkr, Vladimir and River couldn't come too, although River did txt to say he was held up somewhere else. Next time.
Jon, you shoulda been there!

Great shots Lynn. I had great time before and during dinner. Can you believe we talked more about cricket and politics than cameras?!

Great to meet the partners as well. Both of us will be coming next time :)

Definitely must make this a more regular meeting.

Thanks for the great photos Lynn. It was so nice to meet Louise and Bob as well as John, Mike and Ong who I hadn't met before. Also very nice to meet Peter's better half Caroline :D. I'm sorry I got stuck at the other end of the table and we didn't get a chance to catch up, maybe next time. BTW I've told Kerrie, my partner, that she'll be expected at the next gathering :).

cheers,
clay
