I have no words to describe what I feel when I look at these photographs. My heart breaks when I read and listen to the current news and compare it to the world depicted here.
This is an old thread about my visit to Damascus, Syria. Most likely, some of the buildings shown here are now destroyed, and some people shown may be dead or they have left Syria.
I can remember hitching through Syria in 1977. It was a beautiful country and the people unbelievably friendly. It breaks my heart what has happened over the past few years and wonder if peace will ever return. I for one will welcome Syrian refugees being offered a new home in Australia and suspect they'll make a positive contribution to our country. Thanks for the photos Raid. I've probably got some slides in the archives from my time there. Must have a look.
😱 Is there a civil war looming in Israel? Missed that!
What happened in Syria is tragic. Pictures of a better time - most Syrians arriving in the Netherlands are well educated, they will do okay in our society once they settled here. Syria had a middle class before the war and it is a sad thing there wasn't a peaceful transition to democracy...
Thank you, David. I return to it (myself at home) here and there as I watch on TV the news on the destruction of Syria and its people. I am glad that I was there for a few days with my camera. It was a trip in the summer of 2008. There is nothing dated because all images are based a very brief trip to Damascus that occurred within a few days in June 2008.
