Hey!

I just picked up a black Rapidwinder for my MP the other day and it has been giving me some issues, not sure if it is the winder or the camera body. The issue I'm having is that, with film loaded, the Rapidwinder is very rough and grabs the cam winder about 2/3 of a pull then slips, however, without film it advances and feels perfectly smooth with one pull.

I tried reaching out to Tuulikki but she stated that she is unable to advise on Rapidwinder problems.

Any help would be appreciated! I hope I'm posting this into the correct section!

Thank you!

I was lucky to get the box with my used Rapidwinder and it lists six different M models it is compatible with. The MP is not listed. You can go through his thread listing here on RFF to see if there is one that explains the different models of Rapidwinder that he made. I'm of the thought that somewhere I read the MP had its own design of Rapidwinder.

"Rapidwinder Classic and M2 Rapidwinder IXMOO

Rapidwinder Classic fits M4-2, M4-P, M6, M6TTL, M7, MP and MP-3 without modification to the camera. M3 and M4 and MDa can be modified to take it.

M2 Rapidwnder-IXMOO fits the M2 and MD without modification."

Was this the first time you tried the Rapidwinder with the camera? If so then a cla for your camera should fix it. Do you have another camera or borrow one to try? The little spinner thing on the underside of your camera is attached to a rod inside the camera and was probably never used with a winder so needed some lube.

This is what I saw when I was doing research before buying. It is the correct winder ( I would assume) as it has the cam winder, and plastic tulip.

Yes, the camera is fairly new, I bought it new last year, would that call for a CLA already? I unfortunately do not have another camera body nor is there anybody near me that has one I could borrow.

The thumb advance is still very smooth and snappy, I'm assuming that if the cam needed lube it would not wind smooth?

What is your serial number and model number? Did you supply the serial number to Tuulikki as she might be able to identify the model? Or perhaps someone has a list you could search?

I remember there are differences and it may not be obvious.

Best of luck.

You are right a new camera should already have been properly lubed. If it’s not the camera then something else is causing the belt to slip.

Bill,

She did not ask me about a serial number, I did mention MP in my email to her. My MP is a 589XXXXX

Sounds like each one is slightly different, which could be the case for mine just not being compatible with my camera body. I did get the winder for a steal so I wouldn't be too upset with not using it as it adds a nice weight and height to the camera.

It’s been 9 years since Tom passed 😔, this can’t be the first time someone has a Rapidwinder that needs service. @CameraQuest, any ideas who might can help?

Tom was a legend here, the RW was a real treat to use. I once owned M2 IXMOO #1.

This is the M2 I currently own. It’s smooth like slicing butter with hot knife. At one time I had a Rapidwinder on all my M7 bodies. I even had one on the IIIF. I remember it’s possible to tighten the belt inside the winder so it doesn’t slip. It’s been a long time but DAG should be able to do it.

I was doing some homework before I started the hunt for a Rapidwinder. He was definitely a wealth of knowledge, wish I had a chance to have a conversation with him before his passing.

I was curious about that, and that's why I was wondering about having DAG take a look, but if I can service it myself that'd be preferred! Looking at photos it's a fairly simple setup and I know Tom had boasted that his winders were a fraction the amount of parts compared to a leicavit!

You can call or email Don Goldberg to explain the problem with the Rapidwinder and also ask whether the adjustment/fix is something you can do, or whether he needs to do it. Would be nice if there was an easy adjustment to get things working smoothly.
