A permit to use a tripod in Central Park? It must cause jurisdictional disputes; which homeless community collects the money and issues the permits? But being New York City, perhaps understandable; they require permits to possess a firearm as well. So I guess they consider tripods weapons. I considered mine for that more in Korea than I did as a camera platform.

I remember hearing a few years ago that on US parks in Washington, DC (there are many, some of which aren't much bigger that a postage stamp) you would often be accosted for a permit if you carried a tripod. After all, only professionals use them I guess.

Sadly, I'll be there in July, you know the wife wants to go. It is a stuffy white coastal town in Southern California that has plenty of money, and in CA that means values of exclusion. They don't care if you come to spend, in fact the wish the opposite.

The photo contest is probably rigged so just the right PC people can enter.

This little excerpt from the original story:

"As Thien tells DIYP, his friend had a photo shoot using Canon 1DXII & 70-200 II, along with an assistant with OCF lighting and softbox. The ranger stopped him and asked for a permit, and issued him a citation. So now he’ll have to appear in court and pay a fine."

So it was a full on shoot w/ lighting gear etc. Do that, pay for the permit.

I'll be there in July. With my Rollei. Without the paper bag. But I think I'm one of the few people on this thread who read the information on their website and understands it doesn't include the casual photographer NOT doing a photo shoot.

Can't blame Laguna Beach for wanting to generate city revenue from the constant traffic of photographers using the locale as their backdrop. It's one of the most picturesque coastlines in SoCal. Most photographers probably pass the fee onto their clients. If it's not by a pro, then it's just another cost absorbed into the event/announcement/holiday the photo is created for.

It's quite fumny that California is called "The Left Coast", but Orange County is (was?) rather the opposite, excepting of course Laguna Beach. Orange County has always been a home of the upper-middle class, and populated heavily by small business owners and such, particularly Newport Beach. But Laguna Beach belongs more to the self-entitled, who pretend to appreciate art, music, and "the finer things in life."

I grew up in the area, and miss it. But Laguna Beach long ago changed from what it once was, a quiet, residential, beachside town with great views to a trendy and artisitic "community" of busybodies.

Ironically enough, I visited there a couple of years ago and took a lot of photos. I don't think I'll go back.

Rent-seeking by Govt/public authorities is nothing new. When they overstep the mark and try to sting Joe Citizen taking holiday snaps or pictures of his kids and enough people complain, they usually take a few steps backward.

Same thing happens here, Down Under.

Being a local to Laguna I agree it can be stuffy for sure! But it definitely has its charms and it's really not a terrible place at all.

I'm always shooting around town and I've yet to be stopped but I'm going to definitely keep my eye out now!
