Taking the pledge & the cure!

It's about time for an ebay break. The used gear shops are looking better all the time. Just got a 'mint' Contax T from ebay that was actually used but not abused with a broken flash battery door and fungus in the finder windows. I agree with Photodave, at a shop for a few more bucks you can handle the merchandise before you buy and usually get a guarantee, makes for a less stressful purchase, don't you think?

i do agree its better to buy from a reputable source. But ebay is adictive and thats why I need to take the pledge and the cure. 😀

Hello, my name is Al, and I'm a Ebay-aholic...

Not to make lite of AA, but some EBayers need a 12 step program...

In my case I needed a 24 step program. 😀

Actually, since I have most of what I want now, I only bid occassionally. Oh, but only low bids and only on things I know I need in case I really win.

(I think I can safely say that since I am sure nobody would attend the meetings where I live.)

I haven't bought anything on the bay in 2 years. Haven't missed any of it, the competition, the misrepresented goods, the hassles with the postal service...

will there be meetings and do we get "chits" proclaiming our time without ebay?

as for used cameras in shops, I do not see many stores with used sections, [Cals in Costa Mesa used to be great, now they send you across the street to a guy that seems to think all his cameras are worth about triple what the going rate is 😱 ] Samy's behind the Orange Curtin might have a couple of pieces but most of their stuff is in that OTHER county

the rest seem to be heading to digital only disposible cameras [regardless of costs 😱 😱 ]

Got another place in Fullerton that sells used, again inflated prices. I think he makes his $$$ RENTING high end Canon lenses like a 70-200 ISM and the bigger fast primes. 😎

If that's the one I think it is, I did venture in there a few times. Prices were a bit steep, but at least they had a decent selection...

It ain't over 'till it's over

I got a second chance offer on the lens that started this thread. The offer is legit, it came from ebay & is duplicated in my ebay messages. Should I? Shouldn't I? The price isn't a steal, but it's not unreasonable. $790 including shipping. 35mm Summicron, Canada, #2539241. 2nd or 3rd version? 1972, same year as my M5.

Muttering and mumbling.

It MAY be okay...or it MAY have been dropped and unable to focus properly or it MAY be full of sand.
For me that's too much money for something I can't hold in my hands first. Even if you can return it you will be out the shipping $$$.
I'm in the same boat and desperately need a 35mm. I've decided to buy a new CV Ultron in the meantime and wait til I find a Summicron at a shop or through a fellow RFF member.

I fumbled the ball on a 35mm Summicron here at RFF over the weekend. There is a MOST attractive C/V Ultron in the classifieds right now.

ARGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😱

I'm done using ebay for camera gear. I'll stick to this place or local shops.

I still use it to buy records, as the stuff I'm looking for can't be found locally.

I like eBay. I both buy and sell there often. It's a great place and I will most certainly not "take the pledge". I like RFF and its membership too for buying and selling, but the volume here is very, very low and the listing formats are rudimentary compared to eBay.
