Tamron 17mm f3.5 and 24mm f2.5

Looking for opinions on these two lenses.

They will be used on canon full frame or Olympus 4/3rds SLR's.


Is the 24mm f2.5 considered sharp wide open or does it need to be stopped down to get acceptable results. I am considering this lens as a normal lens on the 4/3rds system.


Is the 17mm f3.5 considered pretty good for use on Canon full frame. How much does it need to be stopped down before you begin to see corners and edges sharp. Is the resolution good for a 1Ds Mk II SLR.

I can get one or the other. Which would be better as a walk around lens for general photography?

What is your opinion of these lenses. How much are they worth - new or used ?

First of all, be aware that the Tamron Adaptall II mount for EOS is something of a rarity, so look for the mount before you buy the lens, if you plan to use it on an EF-mount camera. I've been told there's a Chinese knockoff, if you can't find an original Tamron Adaptall EOS mount.

I have the 17mm, and it's not a bad lens on film. I usually use it on my Canon New F-1. While Asher Kelman from http://www.openphotographyforums.com was in town a few weeks ago, we went out shooting together, and I lent him my Tamron 17mm to try out on his Canon 5D. I don't know if Asher follows this forum, but you might try posting over on OPF and maybe he can post a sample shot.

What is your opinion of these lenses. How much are they worth - new or used ?

I have not used these lenses, so cannot comment on their quality, but some completed listing searches on ebay should give you a good idea of their value. You might also try looking at places like KEH.com for pricing.

I have the 24/2.5, but haven't shot it on a DSLR yet. I only have 1.6x & 1.3x crop dslrs, not full-frame.

You can use a Nikon, OM or M42 adaptall2 and then an adapter to EOS.

Thank you for the replies. I have an adaptall to EF mount afapter with confirmation chip. I tried it with the 90mm f2.5 macro and it works - you still have to focus manually, but it beeps when focus is achieved. So the adapter is not a concern. In addition, I have the OM-4/3rds mount adapter and the Tamron Adaptall II adapter for OM. So set there too. All I need to know now is which of the two is the worthwhile buy for digital full frame.

Tamron SP Adaptall 17mm f3.5

I got mine from Keh in "bargain" condition for $175. Corners are soft wide open, even on a APS-C crop format DSLR, and the whole image becomes sharp at f/5.6. When used on my EOS 1DS, f/8 is OK and f/11 is the sweet spot. The lens is very prone to flare -- a common flaw with ultrawides -- and has a rather unpleasant color rendering with a greenish tinge. I don't use it much on full frame, as I find the exaggerated perspective of rectilinear lenses below 20mm quite ugly. I prefer the perspective of a fisheye for these ultrawide shots.

Tamron SP Adaptall 24mm f2.5

I bought mine new in box from new old stock for $75 on eBay. It seems to suffer from some mild lens centering defect, as one side of the frame is sharper than the other when used wide open. The defect disappears around f/4 and the lens becomes good with nice colors, sharpness and contrast.
