Hi!

Found a cool lens at the flea market today, a Tanar 5cm f/1.5. After searching Google a bit I only find them in LTM, but no mentions of any Leica M-mount versions. Could this one have been converted? The mount itself has a serial number. Doesn't look to be a regular Leitz M adapter that has been added onto the lens and the mount doesn't move a bit as I try to unscrew it.

Any ideas or info would be greatly appreciated!

Best,
Mattia

AFAIK they were only made in screw mount. It looks like it has an adapter on it, you can see the little notch that's commonly found on adapters. It's probably been on there for decades so it could be difficult to remove. Great lens to find at a flea market!

You were ofcourse right! I dotted some isopropyl alcohol around the mount and put a lens cap on and gently twisted it and it unscrewed perfectly. Thanks! 🙂

That is a nice lens.

It came as an optional fast lens on the 1957 Tanack SD camera, a sort of Nikon S2 looking camera in LTM mount. I heard it said that Sankyo Kohki made many of the Tanar lenses, while they certainly look it when compared to Sankyo Kohki's famous Komura brand , but I cannot confirm that.

The after market LTM to M mount adaptor could be crazy glued in and acetone could be used to dissolve it if used carefully and kept away from plastic and the optical glass of the lens.

That looks like an actual Leitz adapter, not aftermarket. Those adapters sell for good money. You got a bonus.

Great to have a black 50mm lens from the fifties. Usually these are in chrome. I think it is a Japanese version of the Zeiss Sonnar, so like a Nikkor 50mm f/1.4.

Show us the results if you're gonna use the lens.

Erik.

Wow that is a GREAT flea market find, and in such good condition, too. Congratulations. This would look great with some black and white film. Or digital, I guess 😉

The results look surprisingly very good with very few CAs. I am not too sure, whether any Sonnar-equivalent from the same era, even the real Sonnar, would perform as well. Great find.
