Tape two rolls together?

Somebody said it was possible to load two rolls of 120 film onto the same reel. I have two questions:

a. Will 2 rolls of 120 film fit on one reel? I have the plastic reels, they hold 36exp 35mm film (adjustable for 120 film).

b. If I were to try loading two rolls on a single reel by taping them together end-to-end, what kind of tape should I use? Would certain types of tape cause problems with the developer?

Thanks----😱

No way. Not possible. Two rolls of 120 are longer, combined, than a single 36 exposure roll of 35mm, and that barely fits.

I think it depends which reels you have. Jobos will take two rolls of 120 but I believe Patersons will only take one. Not sure about other manufacturers.

With the Jobos, you're supposed to use the red plastic clip to separate the two rolls. You load one and press the clip down to act as a divider. I think trying to tape the rolls together would just cause headaches - 120 is fiddly enough as it is and any added friction would just cause trouble I suspect.

Isn't a 36 frame roll of 35mm about 1.6m long? At 12 frames of 6x6 plus a bit more for gaps and the ends, 2 rolls of 120 would actually be almost exactly the same. Anyway, Jobo reels definitely take 2 rolls of 120.

I have loaded 2 rolls of 120 onto my Paterson reels without any problems. The reels will easily take a roll of 220.

I just load the first roll, fold the tape over the end of that roll and then load the 2nd roll. The 2nd roll butts up against the tape and does not overlap. The JOBO reels are designed to take 2 rolls. Load the first, run it to the end of the reel, engage the red stop, and load the 2nd roll.

I do it all the time (if I have enough 120 rolls to develop). My reel support 220 roll, i.e. it is long enough for two 120 rolls. I use tape which is already glued to film, unglue paper and tape the second film.

FWIW, I also have done this several times. I never taped the two filsm together though and there was a resultant overlap which resulted in under development for ~a cm, but the rest of films were ok.

Standard plastic Patterson reel set at 120 size; developed in the volume and concentration of developer required for one film. Perfect.

Best of luck,
Niall.

It's true...Paterson Reels will take two rolls of 120 each...At first I would use the tape on the end of the first roll to tape it to the second roll BUT I found that by winding the first roll on to the reel as far as it will wind you can reel the second roll on as normal...
I have developed four rolls of 120 in a three reel (35mm) tank many times...
The image area of film would equal that of a 220 roll...

That's what I do, no problem and it saves a lot of chemicals...

Yes it works,
However, it is quite hard to push the 2 rolls taped back to back but it is doable with some soft hand and steel nerves.
The hard part is to tape them basesi-de to base-side and leave the emaulsion in the outside.

It Worked!

It Worked!

I put the first roll on the reel, leaving about 3 cm or so hanging out. Then I used the tape from the second roll to attach it to the first. I just lined it up as best I could feel. And it worked!

Thanks to all for your comments.

My first attempt tonight at stuffing two rolls on a single reel didnt go exactly as planned. As I was loading them I decided to fold the tape over each other and hope they would be enough of a buffer. Sadly this wasnt the case, I got overlap for half the rolls.

Next time, Ill (wisely) tape the ends together and hope for the best.

I just did this twice tonight...

Put the first roll on with the taped end going on last and fold the tape over onto the film. Keep winding until it will wind no more - it will then be at the very center f the reel.

Now unspool the second roll completely and let it roll back up - it is now reversed - the taped end is now on the leading edge. Now load it as normal - but with the folded over taped end first. Wind as normal using your fingers to hold that second roll as you ratchet it on. (The first roll will simply stay where it is, no need to worry about it.) It will stop when it bumps into the tape on the first roll. And also remember that it is all the way on when it has just cleared the tabs on the reel, so stop ratcheting then....
