Taping over the name of your camera - why bother?

I think you’d be surprised at how many people recognize the name "Leica", but don’t know what one looks like.

Two weeks ago I had an uncle pick up my taped M6, and then proceed to tell me that I should get a Leica because ‘they’re the best’!🙄

Hey, if you steal a Leica where are you going to fence it? Every pawn shop owner in America is visited once a week by the local PD and the serial numbers are run. Anyone that sells anything used...books included at a bookstore...must show valid ID or no sale. PD run serial numbers on Ebay, too. Film cameras don't move. NOt long ago a read a post on a different site about a guy that couldn't sell his Hasselblad to a camera store. Anyone stealing a camera is just stealing it for fun.

Unfortunately the crackheads around here haven't clued into this yet!

I've always pulled all the stickers off my bikes, when I was a kid it was less to prevent theft to to prevent people from judging based on brand - a Huffy with no stickers was no longer grounds for ridicule 🙂 I still do it, mostly out of habit, but again, because I still don't wish to be defined by the brands I buy. And I'm not getting paid, so why advertise for free?

I don't have a taped Leica, but I can certainly understand it. It seems to me that one can make far too much of a non-issue.

"Unfortunately the crackheads around here haven't clued into this yet!'

i spent about 15 years (up untill about two years ago) shooting all over strathcona, china town and the downtown eastside of vancouver, which i'm sure photogdave can tell you ain't such a pretty place. the folks down there are a shade of desperate most people haven't yet seen. some are supporting $1000 a day habit. i know this all very well as my wife is pursuing a phd psychology with a major in addictions counselling. they will steal ANYTHING... including your "old film camera". i taped up every camera i used down there from a contax 159mm to the m6ttl. more to just create as low a profile as possible. never, never lost a camera...
don't fool yourself about some would be thieves... i know a fella that still haunts the main and hastings intersection who i used to give all my old blackandwhite photography, aperture and pop photo to. he surely knows a leica when he see's one.
it's weird how such a small, personal decision can cause such a buzz. because i do it i am a fool?!?! conceited?!?!? it seems to have worked for me and i have shot extensively in some very "dodgey" area's. call me superstitious but i'm going to continue...

No Logo

No Logo

I agree with 40oz on the bike thing I have two bikes that are stripped bare of all stickers and logos. I like the look. If I could do the same to my photo gear that would be great.

Hey Dostacos There is a name for removing/painting all the chrome and emblems/logos off a vehicle. but I cant remember what it is.

I would rather have a Leica with no logo than cover it with black tape. Maybe Leica will offer some special tape in Black or Chrome for the stealth look.🙄

Hey when will Cosina offer a ala carte program. I would consider a ZI or Bessa with no logo for the look not for the "Now my camera is invisible" look.🙂

Degustibus non es disputandem... You cannot dispute taste. If you want to tape up, go ahead. As for me, I don't.

Further, the strap with my new Nikon D40 was not all that comfortable, and it screamed, "Nikon," in yellow on black at both ends of the strap. Lately, I'm making my own leather straps, so the OEM Nikon strap is gone. The Nikon logo on the camera, however, and the little "D40"... these are proudly visible. It seems, that 8 of 10 people in the street do not bother to look, anyhow.

As for Leica, I would not tape it over on my M2.

Cheers, mike

Hey, thanks for the lively conversation, everyone! I like to hear that some folks like taping up their Leicas just because they like the way it looks. Didn't know HCB did it; I can't imagine they wouldn't give him a new one if he had one stolen.

This what my M6 in the taped days:

Interesting to hear that you shot a lot in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, emraphoto. I'm a city planner, and that has been my planning area for seven years now (I like a challenge, I guess). Interestingly, I rarely shoot down there, perhaps because I'm not comfortable doing so for a variety of reasons. I do shoot a lot in Chinatown, though.

My Leica is chrome... is there an appropriate tape to blend with this finish? 🙂 Actually, as an M2, it only says "Leica' on the top surface, and this is not so obvious to others. I haven't done any taping, but I can sympathize with the idea, if only to eliminate the "Oh, wow, a Leica!" response from those who have heard it's the greatest and want to exclaim over it.

I had the same kind of annoying attention in 1970 with a new Honda 750-4... the only 4-cyl m/c on the market, new, unusual, fast, and flashy, and folks were always asking me how fast I'd had it up to. Really no way to disguise the thing, though the subdued blue-green color might have helped a bit. A relief, really, when the Kawasaki 903 came along and mine was no longer the only 4 and fastest thing on 2 wheels. 🙂

If I had a black M with white lettering and red dot on the front I too might be tempted to tone it down a bit just in the interests of discretion. Hmm, I guess I could do that with the Zeiss Ikon, (unlike the Minolta CLE) another "wow" brand!

Offtopic, but it's nice to know there seems to be quite a few people from Vancouver 🙂

Back on topic, isn't putting tape on a camera very much like putting up a sign in your front yard that says "THERE'S NO MONEY BURIED UNDER THIS SIGN"? 🙂 That is, if anybody notices the tape...

Perhaps repainting the camera is a better long-term solution, although I can see people unwilling to go that far with their Leicas 🙂

I've never thought of taping off the name of a camera. The only thing I've done is tape a DOF chart onto the back. I guess it doesn't count, but it's a whole lot more useful..
