Taping over the name of your camera - why bother?

I've been carrying around my new (to me) Rolleiflex for the last few days and have never had so much interest from so many people (all of it friendly).

My M6, on the other hand, has never drawn any attention, even with its red dot.

well i guess "most of you" got me a thinkin'... hey! maybe he's talking about me. you know, most of you... a larger than normal amount of you, the bulk of those involved etc.
so... i remain curious. hows does one come to this conclusion?

There's one really amusing guy, who shall remain unnamed, who posts on this forum, and most heavily on dpreview.com

He's an endless source of amusement to me.

He posts constantly and rabidly about all manner of photo equipment in a pompous, boasting fashion, dispensing absurd advice about "IQ", "walkaround lenses", sharpness, the finer points of capturing images....

He buys EVERY piece of equipment, from $4000 "Leica glass", to Canon L lenses, to high priced digital point and shoot bodies, then posts about it online. (no lie)

I kid you not, without fail, three days later at the most, he then sells what he just bought on eBay, sometimes at a profit, but usually at a loss. He is shocked because each time he buys the latest and greatest, his photos don't mysteriously improve. It's not a business, it's a mental obession.

From reading his posts, you would think he was the world's greatest artist, but if you ever look at his posted pictures, he had a few sort of out of focus shots of his cats, or his cars, or his front lawn.

It is absolutely hysterical. I love to follow his posts and antics.

Multiply this sort of guy times a few million (to a lesser degree), and you have the latest creation of today's technology.....the internet expert.

I love it.

When I had a Bessa, everybody on the streets thought I had a Leica."look he's got a Leica" or "Is that a Leica?"

Should I tape a Bessa, too, then?

I really resent this. You cannot determine "the truth" or divine my motivation. This thread with its character attacks belongs on PNet.

Frank,

It's only a discussion point, and again it's not directed at you. With no specifics or members that are named why is this looked at as a character assisnation?

I'm not trying to "divine" your motivation, I'm only saying that we have all seen people that fit this mold.....(NO ONE SPECIFIC FRANK) I even said that for a time I did in fact tape over the name and red dot.

Come on Frank it's OK to see both sides..... it's too early in the am. to be resentful 😉

The initials of his first name and surname are the same. That's all I will say. I don't want to create a personal attack.

I will say he has become hysterical more than once when his photos were lambasted by other posters.

He has bought and sold Leica M8's three times. He's currently on a Canon EOS kick.

I do however agree with the sentiments raised that there are too many people generally that are only really interested, or at least only show their interest, in the possesion of a brand or latest technology. I am constantly interupted, usually whilst working with my DSLR's, by people who seem only interested in showing their knowledge of pixels, techy knowhow and ability to read photography magazines. In the twelve years I've worked professionally and had this happen I have never had a conversation with anyone about composition, light, subject matter or creativity. Or even photography in any sense other than as a technology or equipment. Its a shame but then maybe I should just be pleased that, generally, I'm left to get on with my own thing.

I hear ya brother.

Next time you're in London, shoot me an email and we'll talk pictures, not pixels, over a pint.

My Epson R-D1 has generated the most public interest, usually from film Leica photographers who have never seen one.

I like to be friendly to a degree, but I don't like strangers who want to hold/try my camera, who put their greasy fingerprints immediately on the lens or finder window, or who want to debate film vs digital in public.

I keep my camera hidden in a non-camera-type bag and only remove it when I want to shoot, then quickly put it away again.

I usually don't walk around with something dangling from my neck.

I'm with you Frank.

There is a distinct rank of the dSLR forums here with talk of people who "just shoot" and be damned being better than those who might want to slap a bit of tape on their camera.

I tape my cameras because the white lettering is distracting (people want to read it (like those instances when I wear a man-bra over my t-shirt with a logo on it). And because I want to.

I'll be looking about for a thread on "thumb under advance lever" or "collapsible lenses - collapsed or extended in storage" soon 🙂

I got in the habit of taping over the nameplates of my cameras when I was a PJ. It cut way back on the questions while I was trying to work.

I don't bother taping my Nikons any more, but I did tape the "Leica M6" - I think it's ugly and distracting. Same with the red dot - I replaced it with black.

And I don't care what anyone thinks about it.

Where did I say non-tapers were "better" than tapers?

Taping because you "want to" is the best excuse I've heard.

I was just speculating on the motivations of some people who own cameras for perhaps different psychological rewards other than just "photography".

Now if I laughed about dentists in mid-life crisis who buy red 911 Porsches, would I get all the indignation, or simply chuckles?
