I'm sure you've stumbled on them yourself - a listing somewhere asking an exorbitant price for camera-ware. They do make me shake my head….and then laugh. Then I just can't help but watch the item….

So please share them here. Unfortunately the listing link will age off after a time but will be good for a laugh for a few months.

Here's the first listing I'd like to share.

3900GBP - that's about USD6400 or AUD7200 for a 39mm UV filter. 😱

I did contact the seller to check the price and his response was:
"Hello, we are hoping for the right buyer !! 🙂"

Love to meet that 'right' buyer. I have many a potential purchase to show them…

Ironically international postage is the equivalent of $5 sent economy. What?!? If I bought it I'd want EMS minimum or it delivered personally by a harem more realistically.

No need to go to eBay. I remember distinctly a posting in Craigslist, asking $800 for a Nikon N80 and two lenses.

$800 for an outdated film camera and two slow zooms.

That's some nerve... Or ignorance.

I think I've got three or four of those in the bottom of a box somewhere. Now where on earth did I put it? Come to think of it, one of them is Leitz New York, which must make it worth twice as much.

Even $80 would be great price for seller. At least I see there logic - models spells 80 so add an extra zero to model number and here we go!

I love the ones where the seller states, first thing, that they know nothing about photography equipment but the cameras in the estate sale are very valuable...
Then they post about 20 photos of a ratty Leica IIIa with a Summarit that is so badly scratched the front element doesn't produce any specular highlights.
Of course, since it's a Leica that "has not been tested but is cosmetically ok" they ask $1500.
Now that we often have the "make an offer" choice, I love sending these auctions fair offers of $100 for the above stated camera/lens combo. The lens would be a parts unit, usually. The camera would probably need new curtains, beamsplitter, body covering, CLA so after all is said and done, I'd be upside down at least $300 to get it working.
But a IIIa is a wonderful thing!

Yes, I love the "dreaming" auctions.

I've noticed this trend creep into the fold for both camera and audio gear on e*** lately. A growing number of sellers seem to have heard the quote about fools and their money and are pricing their wares outrageously in hopes of snagging one of them.

It's just one more item on the list of reasons that drive me further and further away from the big auction site when making a purchase.

<sigh...>

Could be a money laundering fraud. There's a lot of it about.

Yeah, but a lot of it is people who claim "they need to get out of it what they put into it." Completely ignoring rudimentary economic reality. These items don't move of course, and are then relegated to the trash or the dollar table in a garage sale.

At the opposite end, I once picked up a Minolta 85mm f1.4 in mint condition and box for $75!

Some folks inherit equipment or get cameras as presents and have absolutely no idea how much their stuff is worth 😀

Victor, those are the stories not many people want to hear. 🙂 I think there was a thread whose title had the word bargain, and that was perfect for your post.

Point taken.

On a more topic-related note, almost everything on this website (http://www.kevincameras.com/) seems to be quoted into the atmosphere...$9,000 for a E60 Noctilux or $1,800 for a DR Summicron?

Reminds me of the story about the guy who was selling apples during the Great Depression for $100 apiece. His friend comes over to him and tells him that with that price he's not going to sell many apples. "Yes you're right," says the guy, "but then at this price, I only have to sell one."

One seller I've noticed has all their items priced at $999.99 or Best Offer. I think they do this to be able to hide the actual sale price, though I don't know whom they are hiding from.

I have made offers to some of these people who then came back with a counter offer of $50-100 off the BIN..

Still not worth it...

There is one vendor who prices $10 cameras at $999
They had a Minolta 16II for that price!
Just cannot believe anyone would be that stupid, either the seller or a buyer.
