I don't think it's an M3. Look at the red dot on the lens release button: it's an M6. In fact, he (or someone) blackened the red dot on the camera body, but not on the lens release.

Like people will notice you or your camera just because of a red dot... 🙄 That's a lot of power for a little red dot! 😱

Could it be laquer painted on the chrome? I've wanted to try that on something to see if it protects. Laquer is good because it's really hard, but it can easily be fully removed with laquer thinner no matter how many years pass. Looking at the lens cap and the way it's chipping off it may be laquer..
Don't think I'd experiment with a Leica though. I've got a beat up fsu or two that may be good candidates.

Your absolutely right about laquer. I forgot about that virtue of laquer i.e. it will come off with a rag dampened in laquer thinner. Just don.t get any in a crack where you can't wipe it. Its also very easy to renew since it's its own solvent.

I'm eyeing some likely canidates as I write......

I just spent an hour screwing around trying to do a sample. This test would have been a lot easier to do 20 years ago because of enviormental regulations. The solvent used in laquer based paints, is non-conforming. I have some old Floquil brand laquer based paints that I procurred before the EPA shut um down. Don't try the new stuff (last 10 years) as it is not a true laquer.

I may be able to pull this off but it is no longer practical

It may be he was using a collapsible and a cap because he wanted to stick it in his pocket, when he was too near to home, even HCB may have been shy?

What I would like an opine on (rather than flames) is the strap and what he was doing before he spotted he had been 'drygutched'. The strap seems to be on large split rings so the body will be brassed from these for sure - annoying if you are a scratch merchant.

But the strap seems to be taken across the back of the camera as a brace, if he used 400ASA at 1/250 why did he need a brace?
