best to investigate the more recent sensational threads on this forum to see if they could have cultivated an attack as such.

I´m not an expert, but it´s a bit strange to have this record today (previous record 1 year ago with about 430 users) when the site is going so slow. Maybe an attack?

And I think the previous record was when we made performance tests after a server move.

I had a script running from 10 mashines on different internet connections then.

we all know the proper way to do a witch hunt, is guilty when accused, accused is always guilty. Punishment is death by fire.

Have not moved yet. I have modifyed the configuration files to use as little resource as possible. hope it helps. Soon enough we will be at the new server. When the migration happens, I will have a construction type page for RFF indicating we are down for the move. Maybe within 2 or 3 days.

If it was just the number of users logged in to RFF and resources being grabbed, I could understand it. I suspect that dslrexchange.com and RFF sit on the same server, but do they use the same database? Poor dslrexchange gets dragged down right with it. All two active users.

It will be interesting to watch performance at the new site and note if it follows the same performance drop-off experienced in the last migrations; ie good for a bit and then fall-off more sharply than can be accounted for by number of active users.

Last night I was slowly going from one thread to another and then got a "connection re-set" message. Dunno what(if anything) that means but I am very happy that I can access RFF today.

The man who discovered this is Tsutomu Shimomura, who got famous at getting Kevin Mitnick arrested. Alcatel claims 36% share of the DSL market, with more than 1.7 million units installed ..." So if you have DSL, you might want to check the label on the side of the modem about now.

Go look at the 'Who is online' list. You will see yourself listed as viewing this thread, even though you aren't.

at the time the site runs perfectly again. What was the prob ?
It's simply too easy to slow a site like this down, any goofy idiot can download the software for such an attack somewhere in the internet if he is a bit familiar with the hacker crowd.

Hope it has been a technical prob only ? Somehow I cannot imagine at all that one of those who have gone recently would be so mean.

I would be looking at where all of those guests have been coming from. This looks really suspicious, especially in view of the several disgruntled members that have left recently.

The site was out all morning, with "Not Found" messages, and yesterday I was getting "Connection Refused". SYN attack maybe?

Maybe it is time to require a login before surfing the site.
