That Leica glow?

50mm Summitar f/2, wide open
 
Taken last month with a Fed 5 and rigid Industar 50. This "glow" is actually flare, pleasant I think here but annoying in other shots.

Whether you call it glow or not, for black and white at least, I think the film and development also play a part. I particularly like HP5 in HC110, a little overexposed and underdeveloped for less contrast (?). I am sure someone can step in with an explanation as to the chemistry.
 
This is an available light shot with a Summicron 50. The room was dark but the sun was streaming in through the open window. The contrast in the scene exceeded the lattitude of the film (chromogenic B/W), so the deepest shadows were blocked and the sunny window was blown slightly. Still, the effect is not unpleasant.
