That old thing about Leicas being stealthy...

....I swapped my 'cron DR for a Summaron 35mm 2.8 with eyes, and now I can walk right up to people and shoot a picture, and they just don't see me or my camera.

I would've thought it would be the other way 'round, since now you're pointing at the subject with three lenses instead of one! Fascinating.

There is almost a pathological dislike of Leica owners by a large chunk of photographers who use other equipment and there is a pathological drive in Leica owners to associate their self-esteem with their Leica gear. When you add these two together in internet forums the result is endless threads like this where some people feel attacking their gear choice is as bad as someone attacking their religion or ethnicity.

All of this waste of mental energy could be fixed if people posted more photos, talked more about photos and become photoholic rather than zuikoholic or Leicaholic or gearholic... People need to post more photos and less words... And every time they posted more words it should ring warning bells to them that creativly they have run dry so hence the chit chat.

Maybe it's due to my age, or the fact that I only got back to film recently, but I don't give a flying f--k what anyone thinks of my M3! I only know that I love using it.

I agree that it would be nice to see more pictures posted. Uploading photos is the thing I am finding most difficult/tedious - it is painful to resize photos to bring the file size down, then even with a fast connection it takes a along time to transfer. If someone can point me to their favorite thread that describes a good protocol to follow, I would appreciate it.

Roger: I should have used an emoticon to denote that my 99% estimate was 99% (more like 50%) tongue-in cheek ;-)

Also, note that I am not implying that wanting to be noticed is incompatible with being a prolific, excellent photographer. Alas, some of the best-known artists have been some of the greatest carvers for attention, too.

Sorry: irony doesn't always translate well onto the screen. And often emoticons make it worse...

Personally, I'd be happy if people didn't notice my cameras but did notice my pictures.

Cheers,

R.

Randy, I find it easiest, to just use flickr for a quick upload and hosting.
There is a flickr software for Mac (I am sure an equivalent for PC exist also).
You can just drag the image files into the software and it will upload them to flickr.

On the flickr website, you can then choose the right file size of your image, to link to in a forum.

I don't use this software anymore, but do anything in Adobe Lightroom, which now also has an easy and quick flickr upload function.

pictures?

Dirk, thanks a lot - I did not realize that Flickr would resize the files. That is actually a big piece of the puzzle. I was wondering if I would have make a custom script to do that prior to upload.

Superb photos by the way!

Well, I bought the Standard yesterday... serial number 16,600, which would make it a 1929 vintage according to our esteemed host, a Leica IC as far as I can tell, converted a to Standard at some point. A relative steal at 6700 kc I think! And, a propos the actual subject of this thread: A black Standard is not stealthy. Turns heads, it does. Maybe if I mount the 50/1.5 Nokton it will look like a Sony Nex and be ignored???

I'll look into the other shop. Bought some old green, orange, yellow filters there last summer which fit my Summar. Was looking for 50mm viewfinder then but this was not to be had anywhere.

Seems a really low number, is the shutter stitched? They have facilities at Skoda to check the speeds and a full repair department.

It really would have been a super steal back when the Crown was 39 to the dollar, seems they have adjusted prices down to adjust for the dropping dollar? Less than $400 now? I would say a very good find. Got that Gold Client card yet?

John

Stealth? Nah! You couldn't hear yourself think.

I don't care what others use. I hope, but don't care - if they care what I use. I take pictures. They should be too.

I care what others use... I'm always looking. Sure, it's about photos, but most that come here like gear too.

Also, I generally don't care what people think of my equipment unless it is a beautiful woman that comments on it... then, it's a bonus.

The only time a female commented on my camera was when I had just bought a Canonet QL-Giii. She said nice camera in front of everyone in a busy intersection, I was very embarrassed and never took out the camera again and sold it... My reasoning was if the camera is noticed and liked by women it means its ostentatious not to mention it must have girly aesthetic so I sold it.

So you got a F3 with motor after selling the girly cam 😀 ?

Thanks ;-)
I use Adobe Lightroom for all flickr uploads.
You can set one preset with a maximum resolution of all automatically uploaded images.
Flickr will then downsize these images to standard resolutions.

These different resolutions will then be able to watch on flickr or for you to link to (something like 640px, 1024px and your max resolution upload).

If you use a Mac, I suppose, you could also script all of this (I am not handy with that) or do an Automator script (which is easier to use, but often less efficient than a apple script in actual use).

If I remember correctly, the flickr upload software has a function for automatic max resolution resizing as well, but I could be wrong.

I have used the M-Leicas for street or candid photography for decades, but time to time also Nikon F's that I find not so bigger than Leicas for obtrusiveness, after all one can "camouflage" a chrome camera with tapes easily . However I found shutter sound level being more "attention catcher" as it causes many times heads to turn of curiousity which could be embarrassing. In the old days I remember a rule by the US court-hauses "
"Still cameras must not produce distracting sound and should produce no greater sound than the Leica M Series Rangefinder camera." I have no idea whether this rule is still valid or not but the M-Leicas are really silent cameras, the only more silent focal plane camera I had was the Contax II between 1/25 and 1/100, inspite of the metal shutter.

I see so many hip girls and not so hip women with DSLRs, so DLSR is no longer the manly camera, in fact the only manly camera is cheap digital P&S because it means you're too manly to carry an iphone and too anti-artsy-types to carry a DSLR... But anyway as to the f3 with motor drive, no thank you, i don't want to carry a cash register around my neck the whole day.

Look at this picture, she was using a DSLR and she really looked good taking those pictures:
