not from canon, not from nikon, not full framed. (1.5x)
Sigma SD1
When announced, I thought the SD1 would be a fantastic camera, I've been following foven technology since it was a proof-of-concept. I thought, however, it would be priced in the mid-range level, not in the "I could buy a car with that kind of cash" range... heck, I could buy an M9 system for that much.
I wonder what an DP compact would look like.. maybe a million dollars at this point XD

Ouch! I had the SD14 and have been waiting for the SD1... but $9700?

Yes, Right There
Ouch. Why would anyone purchase that, when for the same (or less) cash you could buy into a mainstream system (pro body canikon). Hell, isn't the digital Pentax 645 only a couple grand more?

I think it's really cool, but too expensive in a big way. Who do they expec their market to be?

I'm also trying to work out what that cash buys whoever gets one.
Wow, what is Sigma thinking... ? Am I missing something?

1.5 crop factor yielding an effective 46 megapixels...
In spite of the price tag, that still sounds impressive.
That's a lot to squeeze out of a tiny chip, Foveon or no Foveon.
Hopefully the IQ reflects the hype.

Sigma has been pitching these DSLR's with the foveon chip for years, and have never made any inroad into the market.

The MP isn't true though is it, it's hype.

I think they put so freaking much money into this new Foveon sensor that they couldn't make it any cheaper.
It's a real shame. That price is ludicrous. But I bet low-ISO images will be spectacular.

Megapixels are not the same as image resolution.
every digital camera's Megapixel count is different than the final resolution of a image file.

Actually, Sigma is 1.7 crop..

Yikes. I'm sure the dynamic range and the look of the images coming from their sensor would be excellent, but 1.5 crop factor, the ability of only using Sigma mount (I do not like their glass, Sam I am) and more than the price of a new M9 and a used Canon 5D *combined* ?
If it were a third of that, it would have a chance. But this?!
G-zus.

I'm not quite sure what Sigma is thinking here. I'm glad to see a Foveon sensor available in a higher resolution at last, because I really like the look of images from previous generations, but claiming 46MP is just ridiculous.

The new sensor isn't, it's 1.5x. (Not that the difference is all that big.)

The number issue has always been a point of contention. One could say one roll of film has 36 frames, or 108 frames of color layers.
I'm sure an over-chatty guy at their marketing department pushed for the whole thing.

I double checked it and it's not April 1st. So what the hell is this. Ridiculous price.

The best camera is one that still works!
If it was April 1st at least there would be an explanation for the price!
So what will it do that a $2500.00 D700 won't ... and finally we have a camera with a price tag that makes the M9 look like a bargain!

IIRC, there are super secret features to justify the cost ... wash your car, perform invasive surgery, and it even feeds the poor.
Sshhh, don't tell anyone
