The $40 challenge - anybody interested?

I might be up for this as well. Does the camera have to come from ebay tho? No regular shops that sell 'used before' stuff

In theory yes. But it's hard to proof. And if you can't proof how much you paid, you can only compete "in spirit".

Remember this "contest" is supposed to be just for fun. There is no price to win other then the camera you buy. I thought of Ebay, because we all have a level "playing field".

See, here's the problem.
In the last year I've picked up a Canon QL17 GIII for $15 clean and working. And a Olympus 35RC for $35 clean and working.

I have more success locally than I've ever had on E-bay. Even if I add the 8.7% state sales tax and with substitute 1.4v zinc air batteries @ .75 cents each, I still come out ahead on the $40 limit.

The problem is of course that I don't want to search through my pile of debit receipts looking for 'The Estate Store' or 'Finders Keeper's antique mall'. So.... no proof, just my word.

Here is my "proof of purchase" on the Olympus ECR, I had actually paid less than I recalled.

Cool! Here is my plan: In about two weeks from now I will start a new thread were we can all post our bargain cameras, the "proof of purchase" and a photo taken with it. After that we can create a poll (if I can figure out how that works) and we can vote on who got the best bargain.

You don't have to participate in the contest to vote, of course.

I think this is a lot of fun so far.

BTW. I missed a great opportunity today. A really neat Petri camera that would have fit right in the budget. But darn, I was a few minutes late :(
Back to the search!

Cheers!

OK i'm in. too bad i tossed the receipt of the OM 1 i recently bought for 22€. Ah well. Every excuse to buy another camera is a good one :) Great contest!

I'm in. Got my eye on a good candidate right now. If that doesn't work out, would a fixed focus work? I have a PEN EE on the way.

Edit: Would I get extra points for half frame or half the points?

i'm waiting for someone to come in with some $25 M3/summicron or Nikon S2 50/1.4 anniversary find at a local yard sale... lol

I found an interesting little camera for 5€. The guy that has it up for sale lives near my work so I'll pick it up tomorrow to save on shipping. I will however calculate how much the extra gas (as in petrol, not the other kind of gas) costs me.

Just one problem. The camera is broken. Fingers crossed I can fix it.

Zorki4 w/ Case and Jupiter 8 50/2 working at all speeds for 26.40€ .. so about $38 US dollars back then .. maybe $35 now.

Best thing about it: I sold the camera w/o the lens when I got my M2 for the same price. So I got the very good J8 for the price of shipping.
IMO the J8 wipes the floor with most fixed lens RFs .. only the Zorki is a bit annoying to use.

Looks like a fun contest. I, however, am camera poor, and I just purchased a new 6x9 folder even so (Not $40, not RF). I've got to thin out what I have. Hey, maybe I could afford a Leica. :D

Not.

LOL.....theres a industar 61 on the end of a russian rangefinder at my favorite vintage camera store. it's 300 HKD.....roughly 39.12$....

you were planning this contest for me weren't you?;)

Since I'm perpetually camera shopping anyway, I'll give it a shot.
Unfortunately the Argus C-3 I just bought doesn't count.

I foresee a lot of Argus C3s, Olympus trips, pens and XA's. I'm curious what other camera's we will come up with.
