The $40 challenge - anybody interested?

I have an unreasonable aversion to Kodaks. Possibly a reaction to their former ubiquity. But that looks cute & quirky. Look forward to seeing your photos.

Despite the obvious temptation, I had resolved not to get involved in buying another camera just for the sake of competition. So I bought one simply because it was cheap ($15 shipped), but now that I think about it, it also qualifies for this little contest - convenient, eh? I'm not letting on what it is until I have it in my hands. It may be slightly broken at the moment, but hopefully I can resolve that. We shall see....

I can play if we can Roll Back the Hands of Time to 2/1/13, when I bought a Minox GL from RFFer Dave S. for $29.75 incl shipping! Still have the RFF email! Puhleeeeeze?

Otherwise I'll have to sit on the sidelines and cry coz I got no more camera funds until I sell one of my babies--the Nikonos III, the Leica IIIc, the GRDIII....

LOL! Sure you can play. At least you have proof...
Post it in the new thread so we can all enjoy it.

If you win, I'm going to feel queasy.

Olympus Trip arrived today. Great condition. Magic flag pops up, telling me the shutter and meter are working just fine. PS200 flash working well. Handy little shoulder bag with it.

Hmm... do I go with the Paxette, which is at least a rangefinder, or with the Trip, with its Zuiko? Decisions decisions...

Oh Dave, I'll share the podium with you! And you can use the Minox to take the Winning Portrait of Moi!

But if winning this means everything to you, I'll sell it back to you for $29.75, shipping included. Then after you win, sell it back to me for the same price again.

It is such a cutie. I have only run one test roll shot of trivial indoors night stuff entirely with flash, so I have to get the best out of it in the coming week.

"I was the guy that sold the guy the actual camera that won the $40 Challenge. No, really I did. I'm serious!" :D

LOL this thread is making me spend $$ (jk it's just an excuse :))

Just got Yashica M with 45mm 1.9 for $20.04 (camera was 6.99). And guess what? seems to work perfectly. Clean glass, good shutter from Bulb to 1/500, self timer, aperture etc etc. Rangefinder patch is dimmer that I would like but I'm not complaining (alignment is good!). I was actually surprised by the heft and the feel of the camera - that high quality vintage feel with smooth operation. After cleaning the shutter blades, I popped in a roll to see how it performs. We'll see in a week or two.

Well I can't really buy any MORE cameras right now,the only thing I have that would qualify is an XA-2, but I bought that almost a year ago....

I may have to slip it in and hope nobody notices....

Oh man, I'm a bargain hunter fanatic! I've ben wanting another camera, but just dont know if I can score another deal like my last one a couple months ago. I pickedup a Minolta Hi-Matic 9 with never ready case in good condition, working, for $5.00 at the local flea market. Throw in a light seal kit for $8.00 and I'm coming in at $13.00 for the whole package. I also picked up an electro 35 GSN for $20, and a Miranda F slr for $10.

I've got some money in the paypal, gonna give this a shot!

Sounds like you have a real nose for a bargain! As for me, I was hoping to get an Olympus ECR for this challenge (what? three cameras for one challenge?), but it went over the limit.

Still got it, though. Looking forward to shooting completely automatically with a rangefinder. But meanwhile the Paxette & Trip are busy, though I haven't felt awfully inspired.

Well, I've been having some trouble with my Canonet ever since I got it a few weeks ago, and now it's getting even worse. (And it looks like the seller is just going to blow me off)

So... I just might be in the market for another inexpensive rangefinder after all.

That sucks. What flavor Canonet is it and what's the trouble?

It's a QL-17
The PO did new light seals and cleaned the VF.

But it's got a few problems...
I cleaned it out as best I could, but it still scratches the film pretty badly. I think it has to do with the QL spool not working right. It has a hard time feeding film, and sometimes it gets jammed up completely.
And just the other day... It stopped working all together. The advance lever would just keep winding, but not cocking the shutter. The next morning I picked it up, and it started working again, but I certainly don't feel like I can trust it.

It's a shame, I LOVE the camera. It's my only RF and I took it with me for a trip into NY just after I got it, and ended up getting one of my all time favorite shots.
Fortunately that frame was pretty scratch free.

I got a Leica!
Unfortunately it breaks the "No Autofocus" rule and when it was all said and done, it was a couple of bucks over budget. Still, I can technically call myself a Leica owner now!

The search continues...

Lame. I was hoping it was one of the usual sticky shutter/wild meter issues. I've never heard of the film advance weirdness you are experiencing. Such a shame, as the 17 is a great little camera.
