the 75mm conundrum...

On a different note...as of this morning my 75 does not focus correctly on the M8 again.

Edit:Scratch that, looks like the rangefinder on one of my bodies might of gotten knocked out.

Well I really hope so! Needless to say its a lens I treasure and am very careful with. Damaging a lens element is pretty unthinkable to me, but it was just a consideration in the cron vs lux debate that the older glass may be a bit more of a problem.

The site is www.reidreviews.com. A good source for balanced info about leica and other gear. His review of the 90mm Summarit is quite interesting. One of the lenses he compares is the Sonnar, which he found impressive. The site is worth the fee.

75 1.4

75 1.4

I'm getting rid of my 75 1.4 as we speak. The thing is far too heavy, weighs my normally light bag down. Most importantly, shooting quickly gesticulating people is a nightmare to focus on when I'm using the M8. I'm settling for a 50mm for portraits from now on. The 75mm is just a joke.
 
Hey Richard, I forgot the smiley for sarcasm. The 75mm Summilux is the one lens that I won't sell.

I have had a busy week and slight sense of humour failure!
Incidentally I am not sure which lens is best for shooting gesticulating people with but let us hope that Ash1978 finds it. That way both he and the purchaser of his 75 lux will be happy too. Generally when people are gesticulating at me I I take cover.

really now...

any f1.4 lens or faster is a specialized use lens, one either needs it or not. no reason for anyone to get snippy whether one sells it or not! I had one 20 yrs ago and sold it. kind of regretted it since. but would I buy it again, don't know. in the present with an M8 that can shoot well at 320 ISO and above, I have less need then with my old M6. today I would buy a 75mm Summarit or even an CV version. best of luck with the sale, these are going for great prices compared to 20 yrs ago...jmho....

really wish Zeiss or CV would come out with a more compact version of an f2 or f1.4 that does not cost an arm or leg...but for me I am not pushed for now...

D Weston I absolutely agree that not every one needs this lens. I just simply make the point that just because one does not need it, (or can not use it) they should not then refer to it as a joke. Clearly for the gentleman in question selling is the propper thing to do, but perhaps counter productive from an economic viewpoint to refer to it as a joke at least until after money has changed hands!

I agree that the f1.4 stop is not needed for low light use with an M8, the attraction is more the shallow depth of field and out of focus areas. It is pretty heavy on an M8 but this tends to slow things down in a medium format sort of a way. Yummy.

Personally I still have my M6 and then the extra stop really does make a difference.

i've been borrowing this lens for a week or so now, i shot a show with it on thursday night. it was a joy to use, the longer throw of the focus ring made shooting on the stage much easier than any other lens i own, it really makes me want a noctilux even more!

I need to check out some f2 shots from the current APO 75mm, or possibly try one out before i make my mind up. anyone have any f2 APO shots?

Like the rest of you, I won't be selling my 75 lux. I like using mine for stage work if I'm limited to a quiet RF. For stage work though, a 75 isn't long enough unless you're in the wings or the pit. For theatres and concerts, my favourite's my 180 cron on my DMR, but that weighs a whole lot more!!!

FUNNY THING to be complaining about weight of a lens like the 75mm 'lux compared to the weight of a dslr kit....all things relative I guess. I agree with you Richard, if you need the DOF options given by this lens, NOTHING else will do and the justification of having it outweighs [pardon the pun] its heft. For stage or indoor use, or portrait use where limited DOF is desirable and NOTHING else will do like a 90mm 'cron [not much heft saved here] then there in lies the NEED for the lens. I too, wish the seller good luck and will most likely have no problem selling it....

IN general photography use, these advantages aren't as important and someone who does NOT really need the 75mm 'lux can look elsewhere. To the " joke " comment, one should really try to ignore lots of this rhetoric in the forums as much as possible. All to often I tend to get my back up with this nonsense also, I try to remember needs are different and so is someones experience, tact, and finances. All are understandable for the position of seeing it as a "joke" but a little more common decency would go far in many posts in most forums.

For a poor mans' alternative one might have to settle for a 50mm 'lux or the 90mm 'cron and be happy with that...all in all, not so bad a choice either...

Thanks DWeston for clearing up why I NEED mine, I wasn't SURE for a moment there. But then again, I'm like 4 years old.
