The 87th Nikon F up to $4000 on ebay

When this camera was produced, there were no 1.4s yet available, it should have come with a 2.0
But the 2.0 should be "Tick Mark" version, or an early production example.

Nikon used various designs for its wind levers for the Nikon F. The earliest design was a solid lever that was then drilled out underneath to make the end hollow. Only the earliest Fs had this lever. Nikon then went with a stamped lever similar to the Nikon RF cameras. Other variations followed. Check Koch's book for the exact information. WES

From a total Nikon ignoramous - what is the relevance of the underside of the wind lever?

There were a multitude of changes in the design and manufacture of the Nikon F during it's 15-year run. These are sometimes used to determine the authenticity and integrity of a body, as many parts were interchangeable.

Richard de Stoutz's site gives a comprehensive listing and examples of all these differences, as do Uli Koch's books. Here is an example of all the different wind levers http://www.destoutz.ch/typ_wind-levers.html .
