The best 50mm for 1000us???

Hi, the DR and the rigid has a lot of fans here, is a really good lens, well I have the m7.
The hexanon is other..
the nokton 50mm 1.1 ?? may be?

With an M7 the DR Summicron goggles won't work, but the rigid will perform perfectly. I've had the nokton and it is good, but doesn't really approach the Zeiss sonnar in terms of size and performance across the field.

The 50mm 1.1 seems to have really harsh rendering wideopen. This would be a lens for a specific occasion where you need the 1.1 aperture. I wouldn't consider it for a general purpose lens.

+1 for DR Summicron

I would get a Rigid Summicron first. The rest can wait.
If you can find a clean one for about $600, then you can buy also an Elmar V1 50/2.8. This combo will be make you a happy man.

Yes!
This is exactly what I have, nut DR Cron and Elmar 50mm f/2.8

Here's one with the Elmar 50mm f/.28

Every 50mm I've ever owned for Leica mount has cost under $1000, except for the M-Hexanon f/1.2:

1. Canon f/1.2 LTM
2. Canon f/1.5 LTM
3. Canon f/1.8 LTM
4. Canon f/2 collapsible LTM
5. Canon f/3.5 collapsible LTM
6. Jupiter-3 f/1.5 LTM
7. Konica f/1.2 M-Hexanon
8. Konica f/2 M-Hexanon
9. Leica f/2 Summar LTM
10. Leica f/2 Summicron collapsible LTM
11. Leica f/2 Summicron rigid
12. Leica f/2.8 Elmar
13. Leica f/2.8 Elmar-M
14. Nikon f/1.4 LTM
15. Nikon f/2 LTM
16. Nikon f/3.5 rigid LTM
17. Voigtlander f/1.5 Nokton LTM
18. Voigtlander f/2.5 Skopar LTM

Which was the best? Hard to say absolutely -- you need to trade off size, speed, close focus, contrast, resolution, "character", etc.

My subjective favorites at the moment (I prioritize small and fast) would probably be: M-Hex f/2, Summicron rigid, Canon f/1.5, Voigtlander f/1.5. Of those, only the M-Hex focuses down to 0.7m.

Absolute best image quality (not scientifically tested) with modern rendering (sharpness, contrast, color saturation) was probably the M-Hex f/1.2, but it was just too big for my comfort.

Cheers,
Ari

Wow an impressive list!

How do the Canon 1.5 and the Summarit compare?

3) C Sonnar - best 50mm portrait lens ever, but not so easy to manage due to focus shift

I'm not familiar with this lens, but reading about it on an eBay auction, it said that the focus shift is only applicable to digital Leica cameras. No problem on film cameras. Is this true?

+price (if you can find one), +LTM which makes it very versatile, +39mm filters

For the completeness I would add the modern Leica Summarit 50/2.5. I find the OOF more attractive than Summicron.

Johan, yes -- for slower-than-f2 lenses, the Skopar is the bar all around in my experience.

Edit: The Elmar-M may be a better performer, but I i didn't get along with the ergonomics -- felt like it needed a focus tab.

There are a lot of 50 mm lenses for the M. They are all good! It is the lens that manufacturers know how to make well. In most cases it comes down to what speed do you need, how does it fit in your hand etc.
I will add some suggestions: Voigtlander Heliar 50mm f2.0 , the Voigtlander Nokton 50f1.5 ( one of the better fast lenses around.
My personal favorite is the C-Sonnar 50f1.5 - my most used 50.
Also look at Canon 50f1.4 and the Nikkor 50f1.4 - vintage look to the images.
As per usual, check on Flickr by typing in the tag for a lens, ex "Canon 50mm f1.4" and look at the rendering of that lens. Cycle through your potential choices and though Flickr images are small - you get the idea what they can do.
