The better street camera?

My vote is for RF for street work. I tend towards prefocussing and constantly reading the light. Used in this fashion, it is instantly ready and very discrete. The fact is that a Leica generally attracts less attention from potential subjects, due to its looking less "PROFESSIONAL" and therefore less threatening is also advantageous.

An SLR isn't bad for street photography. It's the auto focus that often kills it for me. And with a dSLR for me it's nigh impossible to go to manual settings as with my M2 or R-D1. Manual still means I have to do finger acrobatics to set apperture, shutter time, etc, something my M2 lets me do in a flash with just 1 finger. Then there's the general lack of DoF lines on the lens barrels. But heck, an old manual SLR works just as well as my M2 for "street".

Ah, but the Kiev 4AM almost have the same focusing range/accuracy as the OM-1 with 50mm/1.8 lens and it is silent 🙂

Too bad it doesn't have the smooth operation and build quality as the OM-1.

My first rangefinder was and still is the Mamiya 7. 16x20's are a breeze and the image quality blows away my DSLRs. I have been scanning on a Cezanne and am able to achieve a pixel count equivalent to that of a 125MP camera. In fact I have to down rez to print a 16x20 with an image resolution of 360ppi. The Mamiya 7 lenses are tack sharp right into the corners-I cannot make this same claim for my Canon wide angles on a full frame sensor. And talk about quiet. When my wife and I are out shooting together and she is right beside me, she often asks "did you take a picture because I did not hear anything". Ofentimes I've taken many😀

So I finally give up.

There is no way to resist the beauty of a m2 with a rigid cron.
I tried to be reasonable but the feel of the cool and smooth metal in my hand just gives me such a big motivation for picture taking which my canon simply doesn't.

I still think its the more convenient camera.

And to make up to my leica ( I hope she forgives me someday ), she will get a nice cla.

I cannot disagree with you 🙂 I like my M2 with a Summitar too.
I also like shooting with a Leica III (any Leica SM camera is good), as it is small, not much louder then the M2, very discreet.
In this moment, I'm experiencing street photography with my Rolleiflex; though people do look at it , they don't understand what I'm doing: they see you and ignore you ... that's almost the perfect tool for street photography.
